Well this has been going on for months now and I've tried many things including the garden hose and still nothing works. It's a very persistent tom cat; he rips up our garbage bags and I still haven't located the owner because his territorial area covers approximately 2 and a half blocks (maybe more).

And I know to you it probably seems an-over-the-top measure but I can assure you that the BB gun I'm using does not pack a punch, it's quite weak to seriously hurt the cat but it will hopefully be enough to scare him off permanently.

What would you suggest then itxtme?

Have someone shoot you with the BB gun a few times. If you don't like it imagine how a small animal would feel about it. You could get fined or jail time for shooting a cat with it.

How about just using a rubbish bin rather than losing loose bags out? That would seem to be the sensible solution.

As an aside I stopped using Wellington council rubbish collection. It's user pays with plastic bags, but they're small and expensive. I pay for a solid plastic bin from a third party company.

Not to bag cqrew's aim, but i was always under the impression that BB guns were not that accurate and so hitting a cat would be hard. The sound/sight of seeing a BB flying at it and possibly hitting things around it would scare most cats.

Maybe you could try a cap gun first cqrew? they make a loud sound which should scare it.

I've shot myself (and my flatmates) with the BB gun and again it's nothing too painful. This persistent tom cat has widdled on my front door step enough times I would strangle it if I could! - *sarcasm* (I won't actually strangle him)

I may have to talk to the flatties about getting a bin rather then using council bags but my front door reeks like p*#s every night I come home.. It's starting to get on my nerves now..

Feel free to suggest anything else besides using my cheap (made-in-Taiwan) BB gun?

Cap gun is a possibility? It would probably scare my neighbours knowing them then it would the tom cat though haha

It is gross aye? I hate the smell of cat pee!

I am going to try a cap gun tonight, so I can let you know the results. It should make a lot of noise and scare most things away.

It's incredibly gross, especially when you have *guests* over for dinner. Sweet bro sounds good - post back with your results!

By the way jaymz, what colour is your "annoying" cat/cats? The tom cat that's causing me havoc is ginger (damn thing)

The cat we have our most trouble with is a white cat, I think it might be racist, cause our cat is black! haha!

The others are a mixture of black, and multi coloured (tortoise) cats.

Sprinkling bleach or ammonia around the door and rubbish bags should deter the blighter(s), and will also mask the smell. Cats have very senstive smell and will certainly put them off. You will need to do this daily for a week or so, even of it appears to be working, otherwise they will come back.

Actually ammonia-based cleaners is actually a bad idea - it too much like urine - it may actually encourage more spraying.
I concocted my own mix when I encouraged my cats to stop weeing in the garage - chilli paste, vinegar and crushed garlic with some oil for longevity (I know, it doesn't mix well). It worked really well.
As SepticSceptic states keep up the effort for at least a week - I read somewhere once that it takes 9 days for a cat to change its established routine.

I know hes not your cat, but if hes peeing in the same place all the time, then feed him some food there. Cats will not pee where they eat.

If the neighborhood child came over your fence repeatedly would you shoot him with a bbgun? Ring the SPCA and ask them for advice on your rights etc. This would be a good time to bring up your well though out bbgun plan and see what kind of reception they give you!

PS I dont even like cats, but I certainly wouldnt shoot one with a gun.
