Hi all,

Currently a war has been waged between our one cat against a 5 - 7 member army and as you can imagine he is losing.

The UN (me) has decided to get involved to provide a resolution to this crisis.

However, due to never been involved in combat of this type, I am after some advice on what would be best.

I have been looking out some options, but what do you guys think:

- Trap the invading enemy - and extract information via water torture (throw water on them)
- Fire blanks as warning - Buy a cap gun, or a paintball gun and just fire it without the paintballs (actual firing of paintballs in town could be dangerous)

Cats are territorial. The territories are marked by scent.

In a neighbourhood with a large cat population territories get shared but at different times of the day/night.
Your cat needs to get established and at a time that works out.
here is a tactic that may help (especially if your cat is new to the neighbourhood).
Keep your cat indoors for several weeks with kitty litter for toilet. The kitty litter (after it is stinky/used - I am talking urine) is perfect for sprinkling at boundaries and after a period helps establish the cats territory and presence.

If the cats are hanging around in your backyard then all you need to do is hiss at them to tell them to go.

I also conduct my own running repairs on my cats (I used to have 3 that warred). Identify the wounds early, and trim the fur right back with scissors to expose the wound and stop it healing with fur in the wound - which causes the infections. Clean the wounds with Hibicleanse which you may need to convince your vet to sell to you. This will save you heaps of money - and keep your cat fighting fit.

Dont let the other cats into your house - otherwise there will be a spraying war.
A catdoor with a magnetic collar is useful (if your cat tolerates collars).

You should ensure the safety of your cat first. I suggest a helmet.

I use a nylon pellet gun ($30) - the pellets don't hurt if they hit, but it scares the hell out of them because they can see it coming! Now whenever a cat is passing my house, its at full speed!

Tried to hiss at them this morning, it was from the kitchen window. But the cat just sat there and looked at me. Tried hissing and waving my arms and it kinda moved but didnt run off.

May have to take to some stronger scaring tactics.

Are they the same as those small BB guns?

I may go and get a cheap cap gun from the $2 shop today, see how that works.

Spoke with a vet friend this morning, said to make our place a scary/not nice place to hang out for the other cats. That should help keep them away.

Whatever you do to the roaming cats, make sure they don't associated the action with you, so if your squirting water at them make sure they don't see you. If they see you, they will be weary of you but not your property. If they cant identity the source of say the water or pellets then they will just associate it with the property itself and stay away.

excellent point rphenix, Our house is quite elevated (zombie proofed) so will provide me the ability to take shots/squirt water from the windows and I can hid behind curtains.

We had a problem with one of the neighbours cats which I thought was a stray (and the cats protection league thought he was feril) - We eventually captured him in a cat cage (thanks to cats protection league) and took him to an after hours vet for the SPCA to pick up next day. I'm a softy so made sure the vet understood that the cat (which we all thought was feril) was NOT to be put down under any circumstances (we were going to pay for boarding if need be). Eventually the 'feril' cat started to warm up to me and let me pat him which made me feel even worse. The SPCA picked him up, and the owner claimed him the next day. I think that Azreal (the cats name) was so terrorfied that he never came back - and to boot the owners keep a much closer eye on him now :)

Haha that made me laugh - I'm sure the cat was no doubt amused by the man in the window hissing and waving his arms ;)

I have a similar problem actually with one of the neighbourhood tom cats marking his territory all over our yard and front door..

But I have a solution to stop the intruder and it involves a semi-auto BB gun (MP5 with tactical laser sight) this should deal to him - I'm planning to covertly sneak up on him at night whilst he's searching through our rubbish bins ;)

Its a fine line between educating the cat and being cruel. I Think you will find actions such as this would be considered for prosecution by the SPCA if they found out. What would you say if you looked out your window and saw your neighbor sneaking up on your pet with a gun and firing at it? At least with a hose your actions cannot be misinterpreted for something they are not!

A cat could easily find this kinda interesting and be more likely to come back :)

You should buy a ghillie suit and hide in the bushes!

Yeah, i thought about one (there are some serious ones on trademe) but they have a high FPS (feet per second) fire speed, which would be harmful to animals and humans if shots missed. Cheap cap guns or low power bb guns are the way to go.
