The one at raumati beach next to Tandoori is also prety good, and alan bollard goes there!

The Codfather. Hinemoa St, Birkenhead, Auckland. Crumbed snapper fillets and chips.

The fillets are $6 each, but worth every penny. I rarely get fish & chips anywhere else now. Totally spoiled.

Chch: Ilam Supreme Seafoods (Ilam/Clyde), or Fendalton Fish (Memorial, beside BP) are both great. The chippie in the Church Corner shops is also great (chicken salt!).

Typically between $1.80-$2.00 a scoop/fish/hot dog.

As a side note the worst fush n chups I've ever had were in Britian. A local chippie around the corner from my great aunts in London cost us 10 quid each (1 fish, 1 chips) and was terrible (soggy, small portions, yucky batter). And the best outside NZ was in Rarotonga (Rainbow Fish n Chips? I think).

alasta: The one on Wakefield Quay, Nelson. I think it's called Haven Takeaways.

Prefer 'The Sands' on Rocks Road down by Tahunanui beach. Smokehouse on Mapua wharf is good too.

Went there tonight and got Fish and Chips - delicious!

Also - having been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease early last year I thought I could never have fish and chips again. I was overjoyed to find they have a dedicated gluten free vat and do a special GF batter. I am not totally sure but it may be the only gluten free capable fish and chip shop in Auckland...

It's also where most people that have fish 'n chips on the beach go.

I love their fish and egg burger, always grab one when I am that way and feel the hunger!

We always go to Big Valley Takeaways in Kaikorai Valley Rd Dunedin (opposite Couplands)
We had fish & Chips tonight cost $16.40
1 Cheese burger
1 Fish
1 Curry rice roll
1 Wonton
1 Meat pattie
1 Onion Sausage
1 Chop suey pattie
1 pine apple ring
$3 worth of chips
Cant complain about that & we still chips left.
Hate going up north & getting takeaways, you pay so much for so little.

I think everyone likes their fish and chips differently, the inlaws have been going to the same chippie in Naenae for the last 50 years and swear by it, but didnt seem anything special to me, just what people have grown up to expect.

Most the chippies in NZ use the frozen MCcain style chip. Now real English chips, will make your fish batter go soggy when wrapped up together, as they are full of moisture, decent chippies will wrap em separately.

You cant beat a real soggy, sweaty chip, with a pinch of salt and tons of vinegar.

They do decent fish at my local(Five star) in Levin, $2.50 for hoki/shark, whatever they dredge up from bottom trawling the new zealand sea bed to around $6-7.oo for snapper,but the chips are the frozen junk. Pile em high and sell em cheap.

Agree the Raumati chippie is good.

They do some good Kebabs in Whangaui;)

Ivans in Glenfield hasnt been an award winner for quite some time (try 5+ years)...and theyve gone downhill in past 6 months due to either the ladies who were running it going on holiday or selling it. It was my favourite until then....

Now Ive moved to Stanmore Bay and found a great takeaways there but dont know the name of it :(
