You know how happy this will make me? Just one word, very.

Meet Pikachu, he is a home server that was once my MacBook, he enjoys being a laptop but Apple have quoted me $1699 to fix his broken logic board + broken keyboard due to Earthquake Damage. He can't be used for much as he only currently has 1x working USB port and Ethernet. He does not boot when the VGA cable is plugged in so he is very useless as a media centre, plus also his headphone jack is useless too so I am using him as a Home Server running Windows 7 (RDC "Get out of jail free" server) which does File Serving, downloading etc with also a Linux Virtual Machine running on it for DNS / Home Proxy + Web Serving.

I will show you some images, as you can see he is in perfect condition apart from a non-working keyboard, and every other port other than the ones in use now. Just to get him doing some work these are actually served off him too.

Also going to http://home.murfy.co.nz will bring up a message to everyone that visits it.

I will name my new server Scyther. She will be amazing.

And honestly, this mac shocks you with close to 240v when you touch it (while being plugged in) - it's a health and safety hazard hence the name "Pikachu"

The HP ProLiant MicroServer's specs look pretty sweet for a home office network - much better than my 2003 desktop and 2 laptops.

Which is still unresolved. As it stands, streaming occurs from the vintage machine over wifi... which is struggling...

My current rig:

Dead PC

The screen is blank because it's dead. That's right, I am PC-less. There is a Mac, but we don't speak of it. It would be very cool to use an honest-to-god server as my desktop PC. But mostly it would be very cool just to have a PC again.

Does your current rig support Wifi and sport nuclear batterys which have magically turned it invisible?
If so, that's a better server than this one :P

Currently I have a non-functioning 6yr old rackmount server I got free from uni and this would be better as it actually goes! lol!

My firewall box is a bit munted - some bricks fell on it.

Quite a lot of bricks, actually. With concrete mixed in for luck.

However we stomped it a bit squarer, then I stuck some other disks in and its "running" as a desktop/file server right now.

So I'd like to get the fileserver functions on their own reliable box please.

This is the dusty old computers I run 87.9FM The Cheese on at home. The one on the left is what my audio plays out of (homebrew PC.. makes lots of noise) This runs the station software and holds all my music (over 4,400 tracks!). The one on the right does all the streaming for the internet and Cable TV. Keeping backups of the music is a nightmare as I do not currently own any NAS device. I am having to backup to 4.7gb DVD Rewriteables which not only is labour intensive and slow, but many hours of work could be lost at any time :( I would put the HP Microserver to work ensuring the Music Library and important data was always backed up. I could also use it to provide a better service for the internet streaming (retiring the HP Compaq pictured, currently in use).

Of course I promise the HP Microserver would be lovingly dusted daily should I win it..

My old trusty dusty HP desktop is being all things to all people in my house at the moment. It needs a break, if not retirement. Something even remotely closer to providing data protection would be have great WAF when I mention the several years of family pics on it... Having something that hovers and glows as in the HP Server pic above would be the envy of all.
