Availability of pure tablet apps on android is still poor, but will improve rapidly Im sure. Even now though there are "only" 2-300 tablet apps, but the needed ones should be there. The Ipad is a beautiful piece of kit, but for me Itunes is a deal breaker. If Ios 5 manages to sever the connection to Itunes, I may become a convert once I stop being a poor student.
If it was up to me today though, it would be one of the Android tablets. I love the android experience, features and usability. It is easy to get to the everyday functions and if you want to customize and play, you can do this easily.
Ultimately, just go and use them in the shops and see what feels right.

Always good advice as it will be a personal preference.
Having said that I have now got my iPad2 and have had a chance to have a bit of a play (when I can pry it out of the kids hands!)
I must say that despite no instructions it is so intuitive the way it is set up that you don't need any. I was always against the "i" products because they were so locked down, while that is still the case you are guaranteed that everything will work seamlessly, and will be available. We were up and running within about 5 min, and most of that was time taken to register it through iTunes.
Again personal choice but I have never had any issues with iTunes so not sure what previous posters are meaning there. Although it would be nice if the iOS5 would remove that tether as an option.
I had a play with the Acer and while it was kinda cool I did find it a bit bigger than the iPad and the O/S like the Android phones I have used...you have to play around with the last 10% of the setup to get it all going how you want, and there is always the last 1% that is quirky or not available. The tech savvy guys of course love the adaptability so horses for courses as always.
For me I just wanted something that would work out of the box without any hassles (wife proof). The iPad has done just that thus far.

I personally would go with an Android tablet, if you don't have other Apple products.
As others have posted Apple stuff ties into other Apple stuff very well. The flip side of this is that Android based products tie very well into Google (yeah, I know there are Google haters out there, see you on another thread).
Gmail, Google Calendar and, probably the best, Google Docs work great on any Android device.
I personally think this integration is a major consideration for tablet purchase. This is because a tablet is probably going to be used in conjunction with other devices, not standing alone as a PC or 'dumb' phone would.
I have an Android smart-phone, a Defy if you must know, and the ability to sync across my home / work desktop and something I can carry makes the thing about 100 times more useful than it would be otherwise be.
As far as iTunes goes and tethering goes. I didn't realise how much of a pain it was until I didn't have to deal with it. I still use iTunes on my home PC for podcasts and music but it is nice not to have to use it to get media on and off my mobile device.
I'm looking at the Iconia at the moment mainly for the features that the iPad can't offer i.e. usb support, Flash, SD card slot and HDMI. (Yes I know the iPad can do these with apps and adapters etc - call me old fashioned I want it to do this out of the box)
also streaming movies through my network and TVNZ On demand whist in bed will prob keep the wifey placated (Happy wife, Happy Life)
The other contenders are Motorolla and Toshiba Tablets which I am yet to see..
Personally, I don't think the tablet market it 'mature' enough for me to go forking out my hard earned.
I am giving it another 12 months.
I want something that has the weight of an iPad with the USB, SD card support of a smart-phone that doesn't cost more than a full spec notebook with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive.
For me there is just not enough that a touch screen offers.

That's probably a smarter idea but 12 months from now is not now.... I'm sure this will make my life better somehow...
