polki: It did mention models but I cannot remember exactly.
I did do significant research on the vsx-520 model and as such i am sure I would have noticed if it said 420 on the price tag.
I guess I can't really make a case until I have a copy of the receipt, if the receipt says 420, I will pay the difference if possible.
If it says 520 then I feel the unit is rightfully mine.

But if the 420 is not going to be good enough, you would be better to just give it all back and cancel it. At the end of the day they screwed up, not you.

This type of thing is a bit clearer when buying online, as the "errors and omissions" clause deals specifically with these situations.

Having gone into the shop, it is slighlty different, but as several people have stated, it all boils down to what Model # was on the display, vs the model # on your receipt vs the model # you physically have at home. If the display said a 420, differ, then my personal decision would be to do the right thing, and return it. If the display stated a 520, and so does the receipt, then there is no issue in this situation, as the store in question have made an error, and will have to wear it.

I do quoting for a living, and not for 1500.00 receivers, but for 150k - 1.5mil+ projects, and if I make errors, I am accountable for them, and so too should the stereo shop if they have presented information incorrectly.

I would pay the difference to keep the vsx-520.

I can have the vsx-520 and upgrade from my Crystal speaker set to the Diamond speaker set all for an extra $200. So I am happy with that compromise.

IF it gets to that they will hopefully at least come to the party and not charge the full difference.

You could try talking to their head office (if they one, don't think you have mentioned the name of the store). They may be more sympathetic to your plight

Charge them time spent by you setting it up, plus any extra if they insist on changing it. It may even out the difference for them!

Thats a great compromise - The Diamond speakers are much better than the crystal (in my opinion)

This seems a bit odd to me, it's no longer in their system yet they still supposedly sold you a 420.

Also you mention that you may be prepared to pay the difference because you like the 520. If it were me I certainly wouldn't be prepared to pay the price that they have it in their system for because:
a. They have inconvenienced you and should offer you some form of compensation.
b. You have the ex-display model, I would expect their system to list the price for an 'sealed-in-the-box-unit'

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Is there much of a price difference - I mean, you've already had it and used it a week, you may have already sent the cardboard box out for recycling and so on. When/if you return it, the shop will not be able to sell it as a new item, but only as returned/reconditioned, which would likely be cheaper than the model they want to replace it with..

This is really simple. If you thought you were getting the 520 (i.e. that is what was verbally talked about/agreed upon), were invoiced the 520, and received the 520, then you're fine. If anyone of those is out of kilter, then there may be avenues the retailer could take, but from experience, any dispute will come down to what is on the invoice.

To use one of the examples that has been shown, if I'd looked at a Ferrari, but been invoiced and received a Hyundai, you could ask for your money back as the goods were not what you expected, but the onus would be on you to prove that you were reasonably expecting the Ferrari. If you'd been looking at a Hyundai, been invoiced a Hyundai, but somehow received the Ferrari then then seller could quite easily prove that a mistake had been made.

It all just comes down to what is a reasonable expectation and in this case it can't be expected that you could read there mind that when they presented you with one offer they were really meanaing something else.

I'm with the guy above, who said Karma is a biatch, I would have called the manager and given a clear account of my situation, and asked them what they felt was reasonable. Seems like an honest mistake, and looks like you have a good deal by way of a solution. Win Win for everyone by the looks?

I have just been in and sorted the paper work and such.
I am happy with the Wharfedale Diamond series i have now and I have kept my receiver. All up $198.03 for the upgrade, that included a $750 discount from retail value of the receiver and speakers.

Many years ago I bought a Video Recorder based on a demo of the model on display in the shop which was incorrectly labelled as a cheaper model.

I agreed to buy the model shown to me. The store then got a box with the cheaper model. I said this is not what I was shown and agreed to buy. The shop sold me the unit on display at the cheaper model price.

For them they wanted to keep the customer happy. Why should the customer be short-changed because the shop made a mistake? I appreciated their decision.
