Hi there,
I recently purchased a Pioneer VSX-520 with Wharfedale speaker set was advertised as a combo package.
So I've since set up the system and it has been in use for 1.5 weeks at home. I receive a call from the store stating that they gave me the wrong receiver it was supposed to be a vsx-420, the display was setup with the 520.
My question is do I have any obligation to return it?
I purchased on HP and as far as I knew it was the right product.
The vsx-420 does not suit my needs either so it is not an option to downgrade.

What are your thoughts?

That's nice to know thank you. I thought that may be the case.

Now to add complication the salesperson is a friend of mine however the person who set up the display is someone else. I don't particularly want my friend to take the rap for this. I am hoping more blame would fall with the salesperson who set up the display.

The product I received was the floor model from said display.

Thoughts on this?

Allow me to play devil's advocate and ask you what you would expect to happen if the box had instead contained, say, an old brick?

What does it say on your invoice re the model of the receiver?
If it says that you were sold a VSX-420 but you got the 520 then I would say that you would have to return it.
If however it says you bought the 520 then you don't have to return it.
The person who setup the display made the mistake so they should take the blame.

IANAL, but I agree with this for the most part. If it says it was the 520 and you genuinely thought it was the 520 then you are fine (if you were, for example, fraudulent by getting your 'friend' to give you the 'wrong' one intentionally, then you wouldn't be of course. But I don't think thats the case here lol.)

What is/was the price difference between the two models? Even if the paperwork says 420, but the 520 is only a little bit more, then there is an argument that the reciept is an innacurate record of your contract and you may yet be able to keep it. If there is a large discrepency in value then I would say you may have to give it back (or at least look at paying the difference).

Return it - karma, as it turns out, is a bitch.
Or, return the lot, get the finance deal cancelled and get something else. Both the VSX420 and VSX520 are obsolete anyway... the VSX521 is the current receiver.

Agreed, but...

If you were shown a 420 on the display, and invoiced a 420 then you get home and find a 520 in a box either market 420 or 520 then you need to contact the store, who should bring you the correct unit and install it for you (if you've already done an installation).

However, you're not saying that, you're saying you took what you were shown.

You were shown a 520, invoiced for a 520 and then the store says 'oh no, that 3 in 1 deal should have said 420!'.

No, in this instance you get to keep the 520 in my view. This is a missleading sales trick to push you into a 520. Having got it home, you then as 'oh, what's the price difference?' they say '$50 and we can charge your CC'... you then say 'oh, charge me cc, it's not worth my time to bring it back'...

I did see your comment about your friend. Sadly your friend has quite a number of issues today. He has to explain why he didn't notice the fault. He's also set him self up to be accused of trying to sneak you a better unit.

As an employee in the appliance world your employer should always want you to see products to your friends, because if you can't sell to them then why should others who don't know or trust you buy from you? However it does some with some complication when things go wrong as can be seen here.

in cases where this has happened previously that i know of (ex. retail chain employee) it was a case of making a bargin with the store manager or whoever it needs to be about this, if you make a good enough case they may just have to grin and bear it.

however if the package that was sold was the 420 and the invoice says so, you will get into issues down the line where if an issue occurs you can struggle to get warranty etc.

As the product that you have does not represent the invoice that you have recieved.

in one instance we had a customer who verified they had recieved a wrong model as they were sold the "A" model which was on display in store but recieved the "Z" model as the delivery guys delievered "Z" instead of "A" and in this instance a new invoice was created with the correct model as the guy said he wanted to keep the better tv and he never completed payment so the outstanding ammount ending up going to baycorp or something similar after our collections team could not get payment either.

i guess its something to think about.

Salt was the amp in the box when you got it home and then you claim it had a brick in it? Seems to me that you're trying to pull a fast one on the store for a second amp by claiming it only has a brick in it!

Or... has some store stock boy pulled a fast one on you by swapping out the amp for a brick and you were just to trusting to check the box?

I confess I think you're right... I'm way to trusting. I just got a new TV and we just assumed that's what was in the box. I never as to check the content of the box these days. Sure in the past I would have checked a box in the store, made sure all the bits were in fact in the box... but not now, not is the box has tape on it... in fact even without tape I still don't check.

Are we simply in to much of a hurry to get out of the store? But at the same time, if we all check every last little bit of the box, how much in store time will that cost and result in higher costs?

So yes... Salt, you raise an excellent question!

Is the answer that we should see a return to the days of the home delivery boy? With 25% youth unemployment, should the government be paying 24 month subs to stores to fund them the dole payment to deliver your stuff and install it for you?

Oh, it's all rather confusing... Let me elaborate:

1. I pay for a Ferrari and receive a Hyundai. I expect the shop to take my Hyundai back and give me the Ferrari.

2. I pay for a Hyundai and receive a Ferrari. If I expected the shop to help me out in (1) then morally I should take back the Ferrari and let them give me a Hyundai instead.

3. I ask for a Ferrari but pay for and receive a Hyundai. I could keep the Hyundai if I wanted, but since I actually ASKED FOR the Ferrari, the shop should allow me to return the Hyundai and pay the difference to get the Ferrari instead.

It sounds to me like OP had scenario (2). In that case he *should* return it.

The invoice is with my father who actually took the hp out so as to get the interest free deal. I will have a scanned copy with me tonight.
I have asked my friend to find out the price difference for me but he has failed to find the vsx-420 in the system as it is that old a model. If it weren't for the interest free deal I would return the lot and go buy elsewhere a newer model, ie. VSX-521 or similar.

So at present,
I cannot confirm the details on the invoice.
I am willing to pay the difference if it is not too much more.
I am not really in a position to return the system due to interest free deal.

Also to clarify the items were not boxed and were on floor display.

Can you remember if the price tag for the bundle, on the floor display, mentioned the models included or was it just the price?

Hi Polki,

it sounds like you should be able to sort this out pretty reasonably with the store, for them is A) they don't want to have to write off the difference etc of not having the correct model and B) don't want to lose you as a customer because you have a bad experience.

i do know that if there is a price difference they can either A) let you pay the difference with cash / CC or eftpos or alternativley they can null and void the interest free and then re-create the purchase documents and get them all resigned with the correct product / price on the invoice.

would be best to talk it over with your dad and the store in person i would suggest.

It did mention models but I cannot remember exactly.
I did do significant research on the vsx-520 model and as such i am sure I would have noticed if it said 420 on the price tag.
I guess I can't really make a case until I have a copy of the receipt, if the receipt says 420, I will pay the difference if possible.
If it says 520 then I feel the unit is rightfully mine.

EDIT:
I am awaiting a call from my friend as I type.

if it does say 520 then you don't really have to do anything because in theory the codes the salesperson used must of correlated to the right product and they are just grasping at straws
