One match doesn't define someone though, so the final will not be what, (if anything) that defines SD as a truly outstanding rugby player, and by the same token, PW's relatively lacklustre (at best) performance last night doesn't detract from from his stellar performance recently.

Well done to both, and to the All Blacks team as a whole.

no, but then I'm not a professional first five who spends hours every week practicing my goal kicking.

Any professional first five could have kicked that goal, and most amateurs too. It was right in front of the posts!
Weepu fluffed his, but they were more difficult. much harder angle (he still should really have got them though)

I've re-read my post. Can't see the word amazing there anywhere. But there was defence and tactical kicking in there as well. I was merely pointing out there was more than one line break and one goal kick.

Clearly you don't know rugby very well, yes Donald wasn't man of the match but he did come on and play a blinder.
And yes the kick was in front, but it was still a 40m kick which isn't easy, amateur and many other professional first fives do NOT kick in world cup finals. He never had the practice you speak of, the man was out whitebaiting not training.

And I think you forget he kicked the WINING points in a world cup final, one we have been waiting for, for 24 years. How many forth string, written off players you know who have done that?

I can imagine the headlines if we didn't win, as we sqandered 12 points of relatively easy kicks. But at the end of the day, a win is a win, even though france brought their A game

As a Waikato man I was very pleased with SD performance. The kick was routine for a kicker, but the situation was intense. Despite that the look on his face was that he treated like every other kick - that scared me. His defense was superb. His tactical kicking was not outstanding, it was solid. A year or two ago he would have rolled the dice and gone for the game breaker, instead he made sure each of his kicks were safe.

His performance up to AB's selection did not warrant him being selected. I actually believed that NOT being selected first, second or third time did him a favour as he tends to over think his game.

This is world cup has produced some amazing stories, his will be one for the ages.

well I didn't say that was all he contributed either. I was pointing out that the only outstanding parts were a single line break and other than that one completely standard penalty kick. everything else he did was bread and butter. Not to say he played badly, he didn't. But he didn'tplay that great either. But to hold him out as some sort of hero (as in the OP) is massively overstating things.

Put it this way, does anyone think he was anywhere near candidate for man of the match? I sincerely hope not.

Interview with him today he said he hasn't practiced kicking at goal in weeks!

Still, hardly a hero. Richie has played 10 years of exceptional rugby for this, he is the hero!
