My family have flagged the idea of gifts altogether for the last few years.

That's not such a bad idea, the Mrs and I got into a bad habit or spending between $500 and $1000 every Christmas or Birthday... was getting a little out of control. Now we've agreed to only spend $100 MAX, and will be a lot better off for it too.
