My partner keeps asking me what I want for Xmas. Unfortunately, I have no idea. We have the big TV, the games machines, tablets, home theatre etc but I am completely stuck.  My new interest is RC Helicopters, but as a newbie I don't know much about them, other than there are 3 channel, 4 channel and 6 channel.  She has offered to buy me a bigger heli, but like I said, I don't know much about them, and wouldn't want her to spend A) A lot of money for me to only use it a few times or B) buy it and then have me crash it within a day.

So any ideas for presents gratefully received.

Realflight is something a friend of mine uses which may be of interest, He bought it when overseas but you buy it with a radio controller which can plug into a pc using a usb connection and then practice on your pc realistically without crashing, He said it's been great for him practicing.

When you're starting out with RC Helis the best advice you can get is to purchase a simulator. Currently the best heli sim is phoenix (http://www.hobbyhangar.co.nz/dvds-mags-simulators/phoenix-simulator-p-585.html)

Secondly, with regard to which model to buy, the larger helis are more stable/easier to work on but cost a lot more to crash. Generally you want to go for the largest you can afford, with most people getting a 450 or 500. My first heli was a Compass Atom 500 and I love it. So easy to work on, and very well made. I've had quite a few crashes and the repair bills have been relatively low.

I also have a Trex 450 which is a bit harder to fly and see, but still is pretty fun to fly.

My Christmas wishlist at the moment is as follows:

- BeastX Flybarless system for the Atom

- New parkzone/eflite plane (Icon A5 or Carbon Z Yak 54)

- SB600/SB900 Speedlite

- Possibly the MD80 grip for my D90

- New PC gear

Wow people spend alot on Xmas presents. My budget is $5 for my family. The recession can't be that bad.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

It is more of a wishlist rather than a realistic list, but my family normally chips in towards one expense present for each person rather than a bunch of small presents.

I hear there is a cheap Helicopter for sale down the Viaduct basin Auckland, It may even come with a Christmas tree attached

You might need a trailer to pick it up

Spa, crate of p*ss and a couple of hookers. Or maybe just one hooker and two crates of p*ss.

I have one ;)

Re: The opening post  - how about both agreeing to not bother with presents?
My family have flagged the idea of gifts altogether for the last few years.
