Regs: i picked up a couple of canon mg5350 printers for about $160 each in the cost+ sale. their current special price of $188 is cheaper than my wholesale buy price from several distributors, so at $160 they were a steal. ink refills normally priced at $30 to go with it cost about $20.

disappontingly, an xbox game on special for $59 was only going to drop to $54 at cost+

Just from an interest point, how busy was the store and which one did you go to? I didn't bother this time as I have done all of my Christmas shopping and have no money left! But last time I went to one it was pretty crazy trying to get someone to check prices for you, they even had the security guard price checking!

Had a great JB Hi FI experience yesturday, waiting in the checkout line with a friend to buy some things. She had a pair of headphones, and I had a pair and some earphones. This JB Hi Fi guy comes up and gets us to leave the line an takes us away to one of the stations they have around the store and then tells us we can have a price reduction on our items, which totaled around $25.

I was pretty happy to get a reduction, considering we were both in the line and so committed to paying the price we had on our items.

I am pretty sure they consider cost + GST to be LANDED cost, so that is cost once all their expenses are taken into account like freight, staff, rent, marketing etc...

That's great for you, great for the sales person (who will get commission on the items he sold you) and bad for the holding company.

Usually 'cost' is taken to be the wholesale price from the distributor. You'll usually find fine print saying something along the lines of "this excludes volume related adjustments" which normally means rebates from the distributor for hitting sales targets. This is generally how they hide the margin even from their own staff.

Stereoworld used to do cost + 5 and they were about to be taken to task by the commerce commission for being dishonest about "cost" then they shutdown.

I have heard a lot of these sales work the same way, but of course it's not really easy to verify.

Unless they actually disclose what the cost is publically it is difficult to know if it is the true cost/wholesale price. Retailers do often sell below cost too (what they purchased it from their wholesaler for) in order to price match with other retailers, but I believe they then get a rebate back from the wholesaler.

i went to the sylvia park store in auckland. because the mall was closed, parking was easy and when i went to the checkout there was only two people in front of me :)

also, the COST price was 'defined' in the flyer to be: "Cost reflects the average invoiced purchase price of the product but does not include any volume related adjustments which may apply" so there is no cost plus labour etc going on.
