gurthang117: My old man goes out in his boat off Waiheke in the Tamaki Strait, sometimes I'll go too but on those occasions we never catch anything!

Not taking bananas on the boat are you ?

Skolink:
semigeek: Moeraki. Does your friend catch the blueys from a boat or shore?

Are there any good shore fishing spots around there? My brothers and I had no luck at Shag Point, on the lighthouse peninsula, and at the Moeraki wharf. My parents live in Palmerston so we are thre fairly regularly.

I believe the Island across from the lighthouse at Moeraki is ok, but you have to access it at low tide, and be back on the lighthouse side before the tide gets too far in.

Which part of Shag Point did you go to? Down on the bach/crib side or down by the boat ramp?

I have taken up fishing again since working part time about a year ago.

I'm in the Wellington area and fish from the shore with a surf casting rod. In the past year I have not caught a single fish in all the areas of Wellington I have tried using squid bait or a metal lure.

Am pretty disappointed - perhaps I'm not fishing where the fish are biting. Have tried Eastbourne, Seaview Wharf, Wellington Airport, Paramata and Pukerua Bay - any tips on where to fish would be appreciated. Maybe there are no fish left in Wellington harbour or Kapiti coast, or you need a boat to catch them.

Love fishing but never have anyone to go with or anyone with a boat... last time I went was about 5 years ago :(

Now Ive moved up to Whangaparaoa, might find some locals I can go with...every second house has a boat in the yard ;)

Tie scallops on as bait. I have seen a huge Snapper caught on a surfcaster off the Northern end of Welly airport and only went there once. Also recommend a fishing course with Pete Lamb, if only to get the good tips of where and when.

Try mussels for bait, fish take what they would normally eat , for example Moki like tuatuas, crab, crayfish, mussels and other shellfish.

Don't despair though, fishing isn't always productive. I have spent hours on a shore surf casting and coming away with nothing, but being out in the open by the sea is always a good way to relax imo.

I have found over the years that the time to fish in Wellington is change of light at either sunrise or sunset. Also avoid days after heavy rain or a big blow. I have a saying 'if the sea is brown the fishing is down'

And mostly, the boats tend to stay in the yard - may touch the water only occasionally ... the cost of fuel for the bigger outboards and towing etc does tend to put a damper on excursions, especially when they go racing around from hot spot to hot spot, never taking the time to feel the tides and currents, and end up catching bugger all fish !!

Whangaparoa used to be quite good for rock and surf fishing many years ago, but seems to be pretty barren these days, though there are some ledges that are still productive, given the right conditions.

How about a kayak ? Wont break the bank too much, will keep you fit, and there are some productive worm beds a just off Stanmore Bay, amongst other areas.

i never found squid to be a very successful bait for surfcasting.

shellfish or crayfish is great for moki and snapper, bonito (tuna) seems to work well for gurnard and stingrays while pilchards work well for pretty much everything else.

recommend that you get some 'bait elastic' if you use soft baits like pilchard or shellfish  when surfasting - you wrap the bait with a length and it stays on the hook a lot better.

and the no.1 tip?  fish over the change of light in the morning.  evening works well too, but morning always seems better (though less convenient for a night own like me :p).  fishing always seems 10 times more productive over the change of light than any other random time of day...

I usually surf cast next to a rivermouth in Taranaki.

Generally catch Kahawai; the occassional herring. Have seen Dory and snapper landed there though

if you want to catch a dory (my fav fish for eating) then grab one of those herrings and throw it back out as a livebait!  live little fish are definately the best bait for john dory
