timmmay: With ASB use a fast cheque direct to their bank account, rather than setting up a bill payment.

I wasn't sure how to do this -- the ACC bill is missing pertinent information, such as their bank details

My minor issue would be with ASB charging $2.00 for setting up new payees, and , i think they also charge  to alter payee setup.

itxtme: Its changing practice in NZ for an organization to charge to recoup the loss of individuals who wish to use CC payments. I dont think this is unfair, why should taxy payers pay for your convenience? Also your second argument is mute, if your bank charges to add payees you should try moving banks.. Or at least talk to the manager and say you will move if they dont come up with a better deal. PS how much does a check book cost now days?

I agree about the CC fees, yet, at 2.5% are they making a profit on CC payments?

I'd rather not change banks as my business is through ASB and my customers do not like changing account numbers.

Unfortunately a cheque book is still required. Once every so often I am required to write one. Cheques are cheap as chips, cheaper than ASB payee setup.

surfisup1000: I'm trying to pay my ACC bill --- ACC have a new online payment option - but, this costs $30 to pay my $1500 annual invoice by credit card.

I could pay via direct debit, but, ASB charges me $2 to make ACC  a payee.

So on principle I'm going to write out a cheque, wander into a westpac branch and pay this bill.

I hope it costs them more to process this way. Free for me (If time is free).

Make sure you write a letter to the Commerce Commission and thank them for in effect allowing credit card fee cost recovery.

I'm ok with CC credit card cost recovery, as long as they only recover costs.

It's ACC and ASB i dislike today :)  ACC for ripping me off on insurance I don't need.

Hell thats bad, a wooping $2. So instead of paying the $2 you going to write out a cheque (which is going to cost you money), wonder down to the bank (which I suppose is in your free time), and possibly stand in a queue.

{MOD EDIT : SP : Removed borderline personal attack, play the ball not the player guys.}

Thats $2 extra I have to feed my hungry children ha ha.

Couldn't you withdraw cash, and pay cash at the bank that ACC uses or suggests to pay at? It shouldn't cost anything to withdraw your own cash from the bank.

If you do that its not ACC that your pissing off.

Maybe transfer the money to your personal account that you don't have to pay the fee on and then pay the ACC bill through that bank account?

And they could legally refuse your payment,

From the Reserve Bank:

The law specifies that you can’t use large quantities of coin as legal tender..... For example, you can use $1 and $2 coins to pay any amount up to $100. For lower value coins, payment can be made for value up to $5.

Merchants could do this before the commerce commission made that decision - in effect what ACC does is they have the card provider charge a "Convenience Fee", and ACC does not have a discount rate deducted from the payment (effectively the credit card commission for ACC is 0%, and the credit card company charges you, the customer, the amount they would have charged ACC). It's not ACC charging the 2.5%, it's Visa or MasterCard.

2.5% is about average for a convenience fee (if you're a small business - I'm surprised ACC got such a shoddy deal from their merchant service provider. Telecom's convenience fee is only 1.5%). They won't be making a profit, the 2.5% is charged separately by the card provider (Visa/MC).

I made my final payment for IRD Income tax last Saturday, and the convenience charge was 1.5% I believe.

I was told it was the fastest way to make a payment show up, and as Feb 7 (The due date) was on Tuesday, the day after a public holiday (which I forgot about hence the panic) I chose to do that. However my jaw dropped when I completed the payment and the last thing it said was "may take 3 working days to clear"... and sure enough on the 8th it was still not showing on my account...

BUT when it was finally processed today they could tell the payment was made on the 4th Feb - and was dated such. So definitely worth every cent of the convenience fee!!

ASB have ACC details on record to add a new payee.  Just use the search facility, type in ACC (I think its the 3rd one found in the list).  Yes they charge you $2 to add it, but it is a one off fee.  If you're in business remember its deductible as its a bank fee and then you can simply make payments via FastCheque.  This is what I do.

That is what I did. My only concern is if ACC changes their bank account number in the future, I don't think that it will automatically change on the bill payment. But I could be wrong.
