I'm trying to pay my ACC bill --- ACC have a new online payment option - but, this costs $30 to pay my $1500 annual invoice by credit card.

I could pay via direct debit, but, ASB charges me $2 to make ACC a payee.

So on principle I'm going to write out a cheque, wander into a westpac branch and pay this bill.

I hope it costs them more to process this way. Free for me (If time is free).

Its changing practice in NZ for an organization to charge to recoup the loss of individuals who wish to use CC payments. I dont think this is unfair, why should taxy payers pay for your convenience? Also your second argument is mute, if your bank charges to add payees you should try moving banks.. Or at least talk to the manager and say you will move if they dont come up with a better deal. PS how much does a check book cost now days?

How much will ASB charge you for the cheque processing? BNZ charges me 65c for each cheque (personal account. not a business a/c) + $2.50 for a new chequebook when I run out, so that's another 5c per cheque.

Still the cheapest option for you though.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Make sure you write a letter to the Commerce Commission and thank them for in effect allowing credit card fee cost recovery.

Yep, I've done that with ASB also, but it's a pain that they won't allow you to store the details for next time.

Compare this with Kiwibank who allow you to save all your Payee data in a table, for later re-use. And then don't charge you anything for the privilege. I use them to pay all our recurring bills and have never paid a cent in fees for this service.

ASB do charge you to save the details of a payee, which is pretty cheeky given the cost of storage of one row in a database table is basically zero. They claim to be a leader in the internet banking space, and maybe they were 15 years ago, but these days it's a commodity and they're trying to extract as much money from customers as they can.

Go look at BNZ's offerings. Puts ASB to shame.

ASB Fast Cheque allows you to use Payees that have already been setup in the Bill Payment section.

Yes but the point is that ASB charge you ($2.50 from memory). None of the other banks I have accounts with do this.

This is the only reason I dislike ASB's otherwise great online banking.

ASB, 1999 called they want their $2.50 "service fee" back...

Hell thats bad, a wooping $2. So instead of paying the $2 you going to write out a cheque (which is going to cost you money), wonder down to the bank (which I suppose is in your free time), and possibly stand in a queue.

You can pay by direct credit (not direct debit), and make a one off payment. The problem is that getting ACCs bank number can be difficult, as they told me to use the banks preauthorised list , which includes ACC, from my bank.
If your bank still charges you, then that is an issue with your bank. Some banks don't charge for payments and bill payment setups.
Companies are entitled to charge a credit card surcharge these days, as it does cost them anyway.

Or TSBs premier account. Although they do charge for some online things, yet if you do it over the phone or fax it is free.
