sbiddle:

One thing that amazed me when I travelled around Scandinavia was how well the people over there spoke English, particularly the Finnish & Norwegians. Maybe Juha can tell us why they speak better English that most NZers despite it being their 2nd or 3rd language!

The fact that these people speak multiple languages probably explains why they are very confident in the use of those languages. Learning another language provides a wider understanding of how language functions, and I think that the course in French which I took during my final year at university actually helped to improve my English language skills as well as my French!
