gzt: To be fair McDonalds calls itself a restaurant. Sit down takeaway?

Anyway here's one from the front page for days now:

"'Evil' dad who was allowed to kill child. Revealed: The tragic series of events that saw a judge grant violent father custody of little girl who was dead just a year later."

Gosh that's serious one of those terrible cases of child abuse. Read half the article and find it is a uk story.

Must be getting gazillions of clicks been on the front page for days. Imho it's an annoying side effect of the free news model. Ideally the news would remain free and the paywalls would implement better information design for customers who need that.

TBH, I felt the much same away - about a story that originated offshore - when I read the thread here on GZ about a poor woman who was sacked for stealing cold sausages. Turned out it happened in Australia. Lost interest at that point.

Exactly but at least M is not going to pin it to the top of the thread list for days to increase the ad clicks...

MikeAqua:

Recently there was fire in a McD's near my office.

Stuff reported it as fire in a Restaurant! surprised

In my book if it doesn't have knives and forks it is not a restaurant.

Just because the American marketing machine says it is so, doesn't make it so...like those filled roles Subway insists are Sandwiches

A bit off topic (sorry!) but has anyone heard that incredibly stupid new advertisement on the radio for Stuff?

You'll know it when you hear it. A woman laughing uncontrollably for about 20 seconds then a spiel for our beloved website.

Heard it this morning on the radio.

I would have thought it is right on topic with this thread.  The lady in the ad is obviously reading all of these "dumb headlines" on stuff and reacting appropriately laughing

Stupid or not, I think it is an effective ad technique: It is amazing that even listening to someone else laugh can make you smile.

Not sure how you can listen to commercial radio.

With "Stuff" website, at least I can avert my eyes. usually avoid click-bait, and get some choice about what I want entering my brain via the visual cortex.

With commercial radio you're completely captive - it's worse than TV.

This was on the car radio Fred99. Usually have it tuned into The Sound, which isn't too bad as far as the music mix goes.

I usually tune in to NewsTalk ZB.  Something about old people's opinions is hilarious, yet...Frustrating.  The ads are pretty tame.  Mostly about retirement villages and life insurance.  I prefer the comprehensive news segment, rather than the "pop culture" news segment on other channels like The Edge.

Speaking of which.  I heard the news person say something to the tune of "Ex-hostage survivor says the New Zealander held captive in Nigeria will be in shock".  Ya' think?

TV1 last night, in the lead up to the 6pm news was teasing a story about how people went to a music festival and were shocked about all the mud. In England. At Glastonbury. The festival that is universally known for turning into a mud pit every single year.

I think Larry Williams on Newstalk ZB - 4-7 pm weekdays - is pretty good, covering news with sides of business and politics with almost no talkback.

Surprisingly???? every person I saw in that clip was wearing gumboots. I guess an entrepreneur must have been selling them to the shocked people at the gate.

At least they didn't put an apostrophe in cars I suppose.

Chilly night with sub-zero temps in many parts

Well, yes; it's winter.  What did you expect?
