Interesting article I read by Ross Clark today in the UK press about Germany struggling to find a way to meet targets. Here's the concluding paragraphs:

"For years, Germany pursued a policy of relying on cheap Russian gas while hoping that some solution to the problem of intermittent renewables would magically appear. This is a policy which it continued even as Putin lined up his tanks on Ukraine’s borders – three nuclear power stations were closed prematurely on New Year’s Eve 2021.

Now, the costs are becoming clearer. Wind and solar are not going to deliver sufficient energy that is cheap and reliable enough to replace all fossil fuels – at least not without some as-yet unclear technology to allow the affordable storage of vast quantities of energy. The inevitable result of trying to plough on with net zero will be yet more sections of German industry disappearing off to South Asia, which is unencumbered by legally-binding targets.

The question is, which country will become the first to rat on its net zero target, to find some of putting it off, watering it down – or changing the definition of what counts? There must be a lot of money on it being Germany, although it may still take a few years before any government feels brave enough to admit the inevitable."

The South Asia reference is to BASF which announced last year that it would build a new $20 billion plant in China because energy in Germany was too expensive.

It would appear reality is rudely intruding in the UK as well. This is from today’s Telegraph:

“The petrol car ban is expected to be delayed as Rishi Sunak considers watering down a string of net zero pledges.

The Telegraph understands that the Prime Minister will make announcements on his net zero plans in a speech as soon as Thursday.

He is expected to reveal that he is pushing the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars back from 2030 to 2035, according to the BBC.

Instead of demanding that the installation of gas boilers be banned after 2035, the Government is considering saying it wants only 80 per cent to be phased out by that year.

The 2026 ban on off-grid oil boilers could be delayed to 2035, and only 80 per cent will have to be got rid of by that date.

Plans to fine landlords for failing to upgrade their properties to a certain level of energy efficiency could be scrapped.”

It's unfortunate that rules and policies around climate change seem to be the first sacrificed when money becomes tight.  We're doing the same thing here - when the government scrubbed $4B in expenditures because of decreased revenue, the first billion was cut from climate change-related policies and programmes.  We are unfortunately going to pay much more in the future as prevention is much cheaper than cure.

Reality is reality. Nobody is going to beggar themselves voluntarily and no politician is going to get elected on a platform of forcing them into penury.

It seems to me that there’s a gap between what technology can currently deliver and what people would like to happen when they fly to G7 meetings and Davos junkets in their private jets to decide what will happen to their charges.

Hey lemmings! Follow me! We can jump through this gap between what technology can currently deliver and what people would like to have happen!

Politicians like those that attend the G7 and like only focus on one thing possibly two, the next election and their bank accounts. They don't give a toss about the future. Here in Aotearoa there is a handful of politicians that care about the future and what our mokopuna and tamariki will inherit.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Well, to start with New Zealand's targets are a farce. There is no conceivable way to meet our targets, and politicians of all stripes have failed to demonstrate any will to pluck even the lowest hanging fruit.

That's exactly what they're doing. Sticking your fingers in your ears and exclaiming that climate change is not real is guaranteeing you're going to get slammed by it. The only difference is that the loudest deniers are voluntarily beggaring their children rather than themselves.

At the rate things are deteriorating, themselves may also be included.

The big issue here is most of the population is very change averse, just look at the crying and moaning if a cycle lane is proposed or any form of alternative transport is proposed.

You've got that right. It concerns the whole EU (and UK). But also you, in the second row, with every import and tourist.

The Human is a fantastic achievement. I can think of many humans who have helped evolve us. Unfortunately what I bolded is what many of us are. Short term gain, leave the long term to other humans which is our tamariki

We can land a probe on a comet or meteor, or we can venture to vast distances as we understand the gravity and propulsion to extend our reach. But we cannot look after ourselves. A point to ponder
