Have just listened to the Audiobook of Storyteller by Dave Grohl: narrated by Dave Grohl.

Really surprisingly engaging and if I didn't already love the guy, after this, I am even more enamoured. He's honest, articulate and at times quite raw and vulnerable. All the while remaining just that little bit egotistical and mildly aloof enough to remain a true rockstar.

Overall, I'd rate this as one of the better autobiographies I have consumed of late. 8/10 from me.

I have just read THE most amazing book I think I have ever read.

It's called Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Totally excellent, extremely entertaining and utterly enjoyable.

A wisecracking American man called Ryland Grace wakes up in a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there, and he has to rely on his wits and a series of science experiments to save not only himself but the human race.

12/10.

Does anyone know if his other books are similarly as good/accessible?

A Countryman's Winter Notebook.

Possibly one of - if not the - most charming books I have ever read.

It is a collection of what were originally brief newspaper articles written by Adrian Bell (who was BBC War Correspondent Martin Bell's father, if that means anything to anyone here) originally published in the Eastern Daily Press between 1950 and 1980.

Adrian was a farmer and a gifted author with a marvellous grasp of prose. The columns run usually to just a couple of pages each in the book and each one is a tiny vignette of winter country life. It is the sort of book one can dip in and out of, a mug of tea to hand - or something more medicinal - and just be transported to another place and another time by words so well written than you can picture everything in tiny detail in your mind.

Such books are rare and, in these difficult times, all the more valuable for the peace and tranquillity they can bring you -  even if just for a wee while.

So after reading Hail Mary, I was told to read The Martian. It was good, but in my opinion not a patch on Hail Mary. I did enjoy it but found it a bit more technical and I glazed over it a bit.

I've started the first of the BobiVerse books, I'll be interested to see where that goes.

Artemis was a good read.  Quite different from Hail Mary and The Martian which were very similar to each other.

His main characters do all read pretty similar.

Yeah, I've heard mixed things about it, I'll probably try it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm part way through the audio book and enjoying it.

I have just seen that Mark Greaney's 'The Gray Man' book will be released as a movie this July.  I am not so sure about Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry, but he is six feet tall and fit, so makes more sense than Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher at least.  There have been some quite good film and TV adaptions of really good books in the last few years, so I am hoping for great things with this one.  The Amazon version of Reacher was OK.  Apple's Slow Horses and Foundation were both excellent, and I can't wait for series two.  The four seasons of Camaron Strike have all been very watchable and the Dune movie was very good — although the closer it got to the end, the more worried I became at how they were going to fit the rest of the story into the remaining time.   Jack Carr's The Terminal List is also coming as a movie in July.

I feel like I have read too many average books this year, so I started again with Iain M Banks Culture books, and am currently reading Matter.

Expeditionary Force Book 1 by Craig Alanson.

Considering the extremely engrossing books I have been reading recently and the quality of the story, and writing, whilst I am soldiering on through this book, it's not exactly amazing right now. Interesting enough to keep me reading, and I hope that with 9 books in the series, things improve dramatically and soon.

I read them in the other order, and enjoyed them both, but suspect if I’d read Hail Mary first as you did, then I might have enjoyed The Martian a bit less.

I have enjoyed the BobiVerse series, not really the same style though - not aware of anything that is

Another series that might be worth a look is the Murderbot series by Martha Wells - different again, but very enjoyable dry humour.

Currently ploughing my way through Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.  As with many books I read, drawn to it by criticism.

Kind of witty in places, but overall a bit of a slog.

The owners manual for our new car. It was informative but the plot was very light.
