kingdragonfly: Reported by multiple Christian media outlets. Insurer pulls sexual abuse liability insurance on Canadian megachurch, forcing shutdown.

Reading the subtext in some articles, it sounds like churches of various denominations are worried because insurers are doing more about sexual abuse than the church leaders .

Christianity Today: Canadian Megachurch Puts Ministry on Pause After Insurer Pulls Abuse Coverage

The Meeting House was one of the largest megachurches in Canada, but this Sunday, each of its locations will be empty. Its home church gatherings won’t meet during the week. Kids won’t get together for youth programs. Members can’t see their pastors for counsel.

In the aftermath of a sex abuse scandal that shook the congregation and its leadership, the Ontario-area multisite church announced that it had lost a portion of its insurance coverage and would have to pause its ministry activities.
...

So much for putting their faith in god whom it would seem is less useful than an insurance company.

Handsomedan: Kyle Gass, on his birthday, while playing with Tenacious D in Sydney, made comments about the attempted assassination of a former US president, as a part of the whole "make a wish while you blow out the candles" gag.
...

Also - as a comedy band, I'd say that there is pecedent to make outrageous statements, a-la-Ricky Gervais, who steadfastly remains uncancelled, despite some very harsh words for many different individuals and groups.

...
From memory, Ricky Gervais typically gives warning at the beginning of his controversial performance. He also tamps down his on-stage persona depending on his audience.

Tenacious D did publicly criticize President George W. Bush in the 2000s and performed their song “The Government Totally Sucks” in 2017 in protest of then-President Donald Trump.

Currently it's likely there will be political violence and retribution in the US; Even (most) hard core Republicans are calling for being calm, and peaceful protests.

So Kyle Gass joking that he wish the assassination was complete is the equivalent of throwing lit matches into a shack full of dynamite as a joke.

Besides it not unusual for music groups to break up for even trivial slights.

The Sophgo SG200X, best illustrated with a diagram of what it is:

How is anyone supposed to program this thing?  It's got multiple totally unrelated CPU architectures and OSes/RTOSes in the same device, it must be an absolute nightmare to work with.  Why would anyone create a FrankenSOC like this?

Why don't you just use a higher language and let the interpreter sort out the hardware differences?

Handsomedan: And an even more What The... moment today:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350344324/small-pool-beside-sea-private-island-must-be-fenced-against-owners-wishes"The owners of a private island in Northland have been told to put a barrier around a swimming pool beside the sea, which they say posed “a similar or arguably greater risk to children. "The pool is on the 38-hectare Motukawaiti Island, 3.5km off the Northland coast."

I don't understand the carryon about this. It's a perfectly reasonable request. You could argue a road next to a pool in an unfenced yard poses a bigger danger than an unfenced pool in the yard. There are any number of similar and silly analogies which do not apply.

Jack Black no doubt cancelled the tour and not Kyle Gass. Black has more to lose in USA with his other career and of course it's crazy over there.

Anyone who makes jokes about Trump's close call at this point in time has questionable judgement to say the least. What else could he do?

I'd love to know how Food Bag justifies calling something "broccoli feta crunch" when it consists solely of (cooked) broccoli, spinach and mint.

I fully understand the carry-on.

The pool is literally centimetres from the shoreline, which has the largest swimming pool on earth (the ocean), which is incidentally unfenced

The pool is on a private island  - by definition, the place is both hard to get to and private. And if children were there on the island, they'd not only have the ocean to contend with which remains unfenced but they'd also have had to be on the ocean in a boat to get there in the first place. Did I mention that the ocean is not fenced?

Nothing about this makes sense other than as a lesson in being officious.

There's no doubt that JB cancelled the tour - he's come out and said so.

He has several movies in the can and his ability to distance himself from this debacle is paramount to ensuring they don't stay on the shelf, as opposed to being released in theatres in the US.

It's easier to write a rule that says EVERY pool needs a fence without listing a whole bunch of loopholes.

Having said that, I saw a fancy house on telly that had a kind of shallow plant filled moat around a pool so there is obviously at least one exception.

If the fancy house is fancy enough then the owner might just be paying the infringement fee :)

The presence of additional hazards has no bearing on the requirements for specific hazards. You are already aware boats have all kinds of regulated passenger requirements to reduce risk including lifejackets.

The fact the island is private to some extent as you point out does not prevent the presence of children on the island at all.

The real issue in this particular case is not cost or anything like that. It is because the owner does not want to install a glass barrier fence because they will have to clean it regularly to maintain the lovely view.

Oceans are *scary*. It's (reasonably) possible to get small kids scared of the ocean and treat it as a no-go zone.

Pools look calm and kids have played in pools before, so it's harder to get kids to avoid them.

In good weather the shallow parts of the ocean might actually be less dangerous.
