Watched the Ghostbusters remake the other night. Just awful. I mean, truly terrible. I don't think I can emphasize enough just how bad it was.

In the same vein they are about to mess up the Ocean's franchise with an all-female Ocean's Eight....!

you know they have run out of ideas when they are making a remake of a remake . am i the only one who thinks why.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

vexxxboy: you know they have run out of ideas when they are making a remake of a remake.

Whilst I don't disagree with the sentiment, there are sometimes good reasons for making multiple versions of the same thing; different directors / actors take on the material; different settings, etc.  For example:

Macbeth (1948)

Macbeth (1971)

Macbeth (2006)  (I really enjoyed this one a lot!)

Macbeth (2015)  (yet to see this one)

Although I admit this is a deliberate example of what most people would call a "special exemption" to the don't remake-a-remake rule...

Hollywood ran out of new ideas many years ago. Now there's a trend of turning old movies into TV shows (Lethal Weapon, The Exorcist to name two) as well as turning old TV shows into movies. There's hardly an old show that ain't been turned into a movie by now.

Saw a trailer for the Dukes of Hazzard movie the other day. Escapist nonsense of course but actually pretty well in line with the 'original'.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Exorcist but my wife hates scary things, so I'd have to find time to watch it alone which is not so easy. In fact, finding time to watch even a small percentage of things is hard - I have no idea where the people who watch every episode of multiple shows all week find the time to do anything else!!

So you haven't actually seen that Dukes of Hazzard movie?

Burt Reynolds (with all gray hair) plays Boss Hogg. That should tell you all that you need to know.

No, but it looks like the sort of thing to waste time on a long flight with!

If I am honest, I rarely even manage to keep up with what is on, which channel and when.

Life was a lot simpler when I only had to keep track of BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV and Channel 4....! ;-)

13th (on Netflix)

Starts off with the observation that the USA is only ~5% of the world population, yet has ~25% of the world's prison population.

The 13th Amendment states:

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”

Then presents a very credible history lesson about how the situation may have come about - with particular reference to what I've italicised above.

Relevant to NZ as well, WRT "war on drugs", our high prison population, racial disparity in prison population, and repeated calls for more to be done about "taking crime seriously" by implementing minimum sentencing, 3 strike laws etc.

Finally watched suicide squad. Friends had called it average but I wanted to like it so gave it a go.
Average was too generous. Boring was more accurate. Character's were not likeable and plot was crap. Some Money was spent on production so looked pretty at times. Overall all 2/10

Dr Strange

To me its the best Marvel movie since Ironman, both Ironman and Dr Strange were my 2 favorite comic book characters and both I never expected to see live action movies for.

  • Best acted Marvel movie so far and most drama filled
  • Stuck as close to the comic origin story as it could for a 2 hour movie
  • Special effects top notch
  • action sequences very unique
I'm still wondering how they are going to pull of the massive gang bang of heroes when these Marvel movies reach the final climax.

I just sat through "Independence Day regurgitation" or whatever it was called...  There's 2 hours of bad editing I'll never get back.

"you have the heart of a warrior....." *cut to another scene without resolving anything*

1/10

Finally got round to Spectre. 8/10. Not as good as Skyfall, but I enjoyed it.

Also saw Bridget Jones's Baby (the GF's pick, not mine!). 7/10. Much to my surprise it was quirky, and I had a few laughs in places. Better than expected.
