shk292:

 - I have some common sense (which seems to be lacking from some people) and can see that falling into water which is over one's head is likely to be more dangerous than falling into knee-deep water

Except that some beaches can be very deceptive with holes that move up and down the coast. Knee‐deep water can be waist deep or more within a few metres and the sea comes with wave action that's missing from most pools.

A friend changed from a Spark copper landline to Spark phone via fibre (NO Internet requirement required) ...received letter that he had to quit copper. (Suburb is Ilam in Christchurch)

Result was....

Copper cut off last Friday morning.

Fibre did NOT work until this (Thursday) lunchtime!

So much for a seamless changeover! (Lucky he had a cellphone!)

Spark blamed the fibre, Enable blamed Spark etc.....client told nothing!

kingdragonfly:

I had asked some tree companies to quote cutting it down, but no one would show up.

That's odd. In my experience arborists have been among the best tradies (if I may categorise them as such) in terms of showing up when they say they will.

The CCC wanted feedback on a "revised" parking plan for our Street!

Result of feedback to their plan:

During consultation we heard from 54 individuals and groups. Of the 43 online submissions received, only 18.6% currently feel somewhat safe on Arthur Street. Only 19% fully supported the plan, with another 40.5% partially supporting and 40.5% not supporting the plan.

The "revised" plan is just to rearrange the "deckchairs"!

Without actual enforcement of the restrictions they have no meaning!

This Anker USB charger.  Apart from looking like a 1980s clock radio:

its notable feature is that it has a volume-control knob on the side where you can wind the charging power up or down.  Because your USB-C PD device, which negotiates the correct amount of power to charge at, may... well, I dunno, maybe someone can come up with a reason why this exists apart from "we've really run out of ideas for our chargers".

Charging at high power reduces battery lifespan. There's a lot of people who use an old 5-10W charger for non-urgent charging because dumping 30W into a phone battery is stupid, and it usually doesn't matter if it takes your phone a few hours to charge at your desk or bedside.

Except that both Android and Apple products have for years now had algorithms that slow-charge (or at least slower-charge) the batteries at the optimum rate.  So it's at best solving a problem that mostly doesn't exist, or possibly making it worse when you try and override the charge control software.

A lot of people still believe that slow charging batteries will significantly improve their lifespans, so this is to cater to them so they can fret over dialing it down to just what it needs to be done in the morning so that they might get a little more life out of their phone before its not lasting long enough. I tend to find that software updates stop happening before my battery is giving problems so I just yolo it on a 100w charger and have it done quickly.

Reading reviews, it sounds like the knob is used for making settings changes (traditionally physical buttons)

If running above its total limits, one piece of gear you happen to need powered up as soon as possible may be prioritized.

I've heard of people modifying residential LED lights to extend their life, so that may be a thing.

This bakery:

Welcome to BurtoNZ Bakery, Windsor's first, and only New Zealand style Artisanal Bakery.

Pies.  They do $9 pies.

I'm also not convinced it's a legit NZ bakery because the proprietors aren't Chinese.

They're not cambodian, which would be the next best thing?

I think their web site could use some innovation. The 'wait' icon is a generic spinning set of square blocks - should be a long donut filled progressively with cream.
