msukiwi: Maybe "common" in your world, but not with anyone around here.

I'm familiar with that expression. The article was syndicated from Australia. I expect it's common there too. Expanding this a bit further and specifically, the marina' is on the island, the boat is on the marina, it's fair (and common) in some expressions to say the boat is on the island.

He died because he washed, not because he was 94 years old. Let that be a lesson to us all.

The story itself is dumb - "sovereign citizen" Man demands $6000 from police in bizarre 'sovereign citizen' argument | Otago Daily Times Online News (odt.co.nz) but

His unco-operative behaviour continued at the police station

unco-operative is a new one...

That's an interesting quirk of English. The OED is perfectly happy with either "cooperative" or "co-operative", but "uncooperative" is not allowed the hyphen.

But what can you expect from a mongrel language like ours? :)

Perhaps he was an "uncoordinated operative"?

Yeah, nah.

Stuff thinks we're still at 0.25%. Shahra Hume obviously doesn't have a mortgage, or will get a hell of a shock when he/she comes off their fixed rate.

CNBC:

"Disney, in a shocking late Sunday announcement, said it had reappointed Iger as chief executive, effective immediately."

Three paragraphs later there is a photo of him, referring to him as the "former CEO".

He was CEO before, was replaced and now coming back. They should refer to him as "returning CEO".

I got the impression that they just plonked a file photo on there and kept its existing description.

NZH headline today: “Simon Gault: I made Gordon Ramsay look like a p***y“.

I believe that this common simile is a reference to a cat - i.e a soft, cuddly and non-threatening animal. The fact that the Herald thinks that the saying “look like a pussy” is a crude slang reference to something anatomical - and therefore needs asterisks to censor it - is pretty ignorant and says a lot about NZH and/or the sub-editor who wrote the headline. Do they really think Simon Gault wanted to say he made Gordon Ramsay look like female genitalia? Pathetic really. FFS.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
