What I don't get is that they are still running that credit card payment scam. Surely that is played out  by now?

I can't believe they're still calling and saying they're from "New Zealand Telecom".

Hasn't ever been called that (but it was Telecom New Zealand once upon a time) and it's not even a business anymore.

They really need to keep up with the fast-paced scamming industry, if they want to stay relevant.

It really isn't.  We had a customer get hit with it a couple of weeks ago. Had to completely reimage their computer. They are elderly and his wife has dementia and they pretended to be from the bank and in a moment of fear....

I felt really bad for them. It's hard to get them to understand what all the fuss was about.

I just wasted 15 minutes of a scammer's time. Really enjoyed it. Put on my old people's feeble voice (I really am old), did the helpless technology is way beyond me thing, got the scammer to hold while I put on some relaxing classical music and checked GZ on my laptop as he waited for me to S-l-o-w-l-y (I warned him) go to the other room to switch on the computer. Damn that walking frame!

Nice one.

I recently got one of these calls (+61 number) and decided to take a different tack to normal.

My tack was to ask the young lady if she was religious and then how she could go to temple and pray knowing she had worked to steal from people.

Didn't take too long before she told me to 'just feck orf' and hung up - I thought that part was my job.

That made me smile.

I am not a violent person but those predators really should be taken out and shot. Their actions are reprehensible. I enjoy it when I can give them a hard time but they deserve far, far worse.

Edit: And the telecom companies at this end need to be made to do more to filter this kind of crap out. It isn't impossible.

I expect that there's a whole range of scammers -- foot-soldiers who do the cold calling, tier 2 who handle the replies, designers who create the scam templates, bosses who exchange victims and credit cards, and generals who set the strategy. And probably the foot-soldiers run their own independent scams when they're not working for their boss. So some will be up to speed with the latest (I guess there will be some Winter Olympic scams out already) whilst others just repeat the only one that they know. This is why it's important to never give them any information to refine their technique (e.g. saying to them "I know you're a scammer because you misspelt 'Telecom'").

But do by all means waste as much of their time as possible. :)

I use different tactics according to my mood. I completely knocked a couple of them off their scripts by pressing 2 and insisting that I had made the purchases and I accepted the charges. They didn't know what to do with that. Once I just told the caller that I knew it was a scam and it was a crappy way to live and they really ought to think about what they were doing. There was a long silence before the disconnect.

Sounds like you get more practise than me.

They're a bit of a novelty here.

What made me smile this weekend?

This goal from the FA Cup

Stu Armstrong - one of my favourite players from the team I have supported for the last 40-odd years.

Watching a blatant case of (sexual  ?) harassment unfolding in next doors garden. They really should get a higher fence. This big fella chasing the smaller female all round the place in complete silence. I'm sure she was trying not to laugh on the inside, playing hard to get while he puffs along (that seems strangely familiar...). And then a plaintive cry from the bushes...

Ok , they were two weka, but is that really supposed to make it ok ?

For background info, look up Youtube video interviews with Will Shortz, the guy who creates them.

Ge0rge: That is very well done.

It also has a trap in it! If you answer "it's a trap!" then you also need to say that Star Trek is better.

I'll probably forget all about this, but I'll try :)
