Just watched 'Blue Jasmine' with Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin (amongst other very capable actors) and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

'Enjoyed' as in realizing after an hour that we hadn't moved our positions on the sofa :-)

A brilliant, fairly lighthearted look at relationships and consequences. Cate deserves an Oscar.

I found it depressing. The lady was really messed up.

Watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I was an good entertaining movie and of course shows off our beautiful scenery. Julian Dennison has a good future.

I was glad it didn't ruin the book for me- they are different enough to be both enjoyable on their own merit. I prefer the book though.

Fantastic Beasts or whatever it's called. Went because two of the kids wanted to see it.

I thought it was below average. Minimal plot, some character development and lots of good CGI. Some original imagining of beasts.

Other than that, just JKR et al cranking the handle on the money press and not giving the audience that much in return.

Someone once said that Stephen King could publish his laundry list and it would be a best seller.

I think JKR is in the same place right now.

Seige of Jobbotville - Irish soldiers left to swing in the wind, working for the un, protecting an isolated outpost in Africa under a dictator and against 1000's of mercs. Yes it has violence but surprisingly little for a war movie. Better yet - true story.

Also Nobel - in norweigen - but a good look at other (Non us) soldiers in Afghanistan - Spec ops / norway. The tension between peace and needing to kill to keep it. Very thoughtfully done - almost quiet.

Both Netflix. finally found a provider of movies I am enjoying without massive glitches, limited fare and caching / lagging / buffering issues.

Ghost busters with pseudo science and spec ops forces. It could have been so much more. also some dumb glitches - like the number of times they didn;t use a shot gun loaded with iron - it would have made much more sense.

In the same vein they are about to mess up the Ocean's franchise with an all-female Ocean's Eight....!

Agree with how bad ghostbusters was - also the first ghost scene was very very very very violent. not gory - violent. Made me wish my kids had never seen it.

THey messed it up for kids, then screwed it up for adults. The only thing that might have saved it was if the women had gotten their cloths off and had a bit of a gang bang with Thor- and this is from someone who once saw a porno 30 years ago and never did again as it was sooooo boring and stupid. the only high light was seeing Sigourney Weaver.

Like DarthKermit, I have more than had my fill of superhero and comic book based movies (and had it some time ago). I think Iron Man II was the last one I bothered with. As soon as anyone makes a film that works, Hollywood seems to swarm and produce a string of clones with "bigger explosions" and bigger special effects, and just keep unimaginatively churning them out like sausages.

These days I have more interest in the Film Festival offerings than most mainstream movies. At least you will find originality.

There have been some excellent ones over the years though.

Dick Tracy - use of limited colour - and it had Madonna.

The Shadow - beautiful clothing, and again it was about the feeling and the shadows and light, not mad action.

The one with Bruce Willis in it - Sin city - noir classic

And who could forget Will Smith as a drunken, immortal super hero who just didn't want to be a super hero.

Thor wasnt too bad - pure escapism and that hallowed hush that hit the theatre when all the air got sucked out of the room as woman all over the world took a huge deep breath when Chris Helmsworth took his shirt off? Old fashioned Clark Gablesque sex symbol without the porn factor. Ditto Daniel Craig exiting the water in his first JB movie. A great gender reversal of the classic Bond girl moment.

Iron mans origin was good.

The one i do highly recommend is Gotham - the Commisioner gordan story with a young Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle and of course the back story genesis of all the super criminals. The penguin is just so well played as a complete psychopath , the joker ( played by the actor who was the gay brother in Shameless) and Alfred of course. Full on character development - with action a distant second or third place to the story and development.

Mind you - I might be swayed by the fact that Detective Gordans girl friend is played by Moreena Baccarin, - one of the sexiset actresses' to grace the TV in many a year. (also the wife in Homeland) Dark haired, elfin like and with a Cameran Diaz wicked twinkle in her smile. made me wish I was stuck aboard serenity for the long haul too. Surprised she didnt turn up in Buffy the Vampyre slayer - half the rest of the cast did.

The interesting thing about a curve is that you can see where it's headed.

Seems to me that it won't be too long before we'll be regularly seeing full, gynecologically explicit sex on the big screen, accompanied, of course, by ear-bending music, deafening explosions and epilepsy-inducing light displays. Plus whatever passes for extremely foul language by that time. Although it's hard to imagine what that'd be like - all the usual stuff will have lost its impact. Maybe by then, the most abhorrent bad language could be correct English.

Actually, this sort of movie could probably be entirely computer-generated, thus rendering most of the movie-making industry redundant. Still, there'll be plenty of work for them in politics.

Rogue One (3D) - 8.5/10

I won't go into any details, to avoid spoilers. It was a fun, entertaining film, no mistake abut it. There are some great action set pieces, and some impressive CGI work. I felt that the story is a little bit wobbly in places - for instance, the set up which leads to the discovery of the existence of the plans, and the heist to steal them, felt a little forced and awkward - but once you get past that, it's entertaining to see a piece of the legacy story get filled in. The last 15 minutes, in particular, capture the intensity and desperate importance of the heist, and ties in very neatly to the opening of Star Wars Ep. IV.

My only other little gripe is that the character development was lacking in places, which is unfortunate when you realise that there won't be a follow-up film where they could delve deeper into those characters. I also found it a little jarring that they felt the need to inject in-jokes along the way. I won't mention what these are - if you watch the film, you'll know what I mean. While they may have thought they were being cute or endearing, to me they just felt too eager to shout "THIS IS A STAR WARS FILM!" I think it would have been more mature to leave those kinds of things to the Saga storyline.

A few people had hyped this film as being a "rewatch immediately", but I will be happy waiting for the Blu Ray.

Moana. 10/10

Absolutely outstanding movie. Awesome in almost every way. I wish they had taught us culture this way in high school.

My kids 4 and 7 thought it was amazing too. My nephew and niece 13 and 15 thought it was awesome.

Nice breath and width of emotions from laugh out loud moments to lump in the throat moments.

La La Land, with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. An amazing modern day musical without being corny. Good story, great picture.

Update: Just noticed it's on the top #250 movies on IMDB, currently at #28. Not bad.
