Also shows the lack of common sense shown by the staff member.

Some staff aren't given the leeway to make common sense decisions.

I recall being at Countdown and seeing the young checkout person refusing to sell alcohol until she had sighted both the purchasers' IDs. Purchasers were a couple who were obviously in the 70s...

"Company policy" at the time to avoid any more breaches of the liquor laws...

Or they just made a genuine silly mistake. We've all had moments where we've been tired, said the wrong thing, or missed the completely obvious then looked back at yourself and wondered why you did that. I don't know how many people they go through the same routine with every day but if you dealt with say 30 people per day every day for the same thing it's pretty easy to get into s habit of asking for the same bit of ID each time.

From what I read the staff member acknowledged it at the time and apologised. If they didn't then learn from making a mistake there might be a lack of common sense.

To a certain extent, Christine Rankin's taint still lingers long after she left. It seems to resist any attempts to clean it.

It made international "weird news." How did I miss this story?

I can't include any text from the article because of its details. Not for the squeamish.

The event, dubbed the “Hamilton invasion”, encouraged car enthusiasts to gather at various locations in the Waikato city last night to drift illegally.

Please don't insult car enthusiasts, because they are not car enthusiasts. They are self entitled vandals and louts with no respect for authority, other peoples property and safety, and no respect for pubilc property.

They don't deserve any respect they should be called out for exactly what they are, vandals and louts, and dealt with accordingly.

I guess people in Upper Hutt, Akatarawa Road, happy that it's not their problem this time.

This Detroit school field trip garnered international attention, including the BBC.

I'm glad I don't have kids, don't teach kids, and rarely interact with kids. I'm giving no advice to any involved.

Also in the states, this time in Alaska.

In Alaska, first-degree assault is a felony. This is the most severe form of assault and can result in a severe prison sentence.

By comparison, fourth degree assault is the least severe form of assault, and is a misdemeanor

The officers were charged with fourth degree assault.

I'm surprised they were charged at all, police in the US have unqualified immunity in which they can't be prosecuted for anything they do.  Or at least even if they could be, they're not.

American cops stand out among the "Global North", with Canada a distant 2nd among it. Tables below are sorted by rate per 10M people.

Yep, 15k is a fair bit of coin to change banks. But when it relates to 2.5 million the 15k is put into perspective. It's really not that much at all. 0.6% of the borrowed figure.

The woman  doth protest too much. She needs to get real.

She does need to get real. It’s not a charge for changing banks - it’s the bank legitimately charging her so it can recover costs it will incur if she breaks the fixed-rate contract she made with the bank. If she wanted ‘out’ of the rate arrangement even without changing banks, she would still have to pay it.

Many of the charges and fee structures that banks use are hard to justify but this type of charge is fair and legit. The explanation given by ASB in the linked story is a good one and is backed by the Banking Ombudsman.

Yeah, locking in an interest rate is essentially playing the futures market. If rates go up, one party benefits, if they go down, the other benefits. If one party can walk away without penalty at will then there is no point.

NZH is reporting comprehensively on the Polkinghorne trial in Auckland. I find it really weird that a husband and wife write each other long, long letters (reprinted in NZH) about their relationship etc - rather than sitting down and talking about it.

Almost as bad as texting each other at the same table in a restaurant.

I guess writing is easier in an altercation because there’s no yelling and drama and both parties get to read what possibly couldn’t be said face to face. Also could be a ploy to gather evidence.
