Passengers  Chris Pratt / Jennifer Lawrence

This film seems to be getting a lot of hostility from the (US mainly) critics; in my opinion, that's somewhat undeserved.  Yes, the film has a lot of bad science (which is bad for what is touted as a "science fiction" flick), and a few bus-sized plot holes; but it does also cover some interesting moral and ethical dilemmas; which did generate some interesting discussions in our group afterwards.

At the end of the day, however, I enjoyed watching it - whilst I've seen better films recently ("Arrival" / "Rogue One"), I've also seen an awful lot worse.

Watched Sing today. As a musical animation, pretty good. The story is a bit weak but the message for youngsters is a good one: be corageous.

Kubo and the 2 strings, this better win the oscar for the best animation film. Even if you just watch the first 5 minutes. wow.

Moana - 10/10.  Brilliantly cast and delivered.  Family loved every second. Also at last have new songs for my daughter to sing endlessly other than 'Let it go'.

Trolls -  8/10.  A simple story well told.  Definitely aimed at kids (and big kids at heart).  Fun from go to whoa.

The Accountant - 9/10.  Ben Affleck did a stunning job.  A simple enough but highly engaging story-line that was a bit outside the usual formula. Just enough action for a great balance.

The Hateful Eight - 6/10. Standard Tarantino fare. Not one of his best but ok to watch once.

Rogue One - 8/10 - CGI Tarkin didn't bother me.

The Accountant - 8/10 - Goodwill Hunting meets John Wick. Enjoyed this a lot

Passengers - 6/10 - rather disappointed with this. Was looking for ward to it from the trailer. Excellent production values and SFX (esp the pool scene) and strong actors. Plot holes, while minor, really bug me as a couple of little things could have changed the whole movie. Ethical/moral action is also disturbing (and I'm not usually bothered by this). Was also expecting some big twist at the end.

Sully - Fairly forgettable, but well made and well acted. Also very impressed by Aaron Eckhart's amazing mustache - when Tom Hanks showed up on set sporting his own furry nose neighbour and then saw the grizzly bear slumbering on Eckhart's upper lip, he must have felt quite inadequate! 7/10

Independence Day Resurgence - I really enjoyed the first one back in the day, and having recently rewatched it thought it held up very well as enjoyable popcorn entertainment. I had read the reviews of the sequel so had very low expectations going in, but it was still far worse than I could have ever imagined. Incoherent nonsensical plot, terrible acting, awful dialogue. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. 1/10

The Sullenberger landing was a few minutes from takeoff to the Hudson, how can they make a 90 minute movie on that?

It was primarily about the ensuing investigation, and whether or not he could have made it back to the airport and landed safely. I thought the same as you, but the film held my interest throughout.

Which I'm told was mostly fabricated for dramatic effect?

La La Land, .... An amazing modern day musical without being corny.

Except for the opening scene. Don't walk out folks, it does get much better.

Not really... They added a bit of drama by stretching a little truth, but not mostly fabricated.

They just didn't base the NTSB characters on anyone in particular.

And it was based on a book by "Sully".

I enjoyed it!

I read they made the NTSB out to be hunting for a huilty party, which Sully said wasn't the case. They look at all angles, including when doi you last have a drink, hows life at home, etc, that all normal. Maybe too normal for a movie?  But Ill watch it, I'm an aircraft geek

I don't know, I knew very little about the story going in - just that for some reason they had made an emergency water landing in the Hudson river. Before watching the movie I didn't even know what the cause was.

In the film it was portrayed very much as the NTSB vs the pilots, with the NTSB being out to get him. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this aspect was exaggerated somewhat for the film in order to give it a "villian" of sorts.

Denial - Competently made and well acted, but pretty straight forward true story with no surprises in there at all. 6/10

They did, but it wasn't so much the NTSB but the computer simulations that did that, and the NTSB had to go with it... Watch it and see.

I'm not going to spoil it.
