eracode said, "I didn't realise Luxembourg and Switzerland used to have a coastline." and loydbloke said, "I didn't realise Belgium's coastline had been removed."

They will get a coastline back with global warming.

If lower drown rates is due to lack of coastline, then WSNZ should remove our one to save the nation... logically.

Belgium has only just enough coast for a few people to go for a swim.

I can't find statistics specifically related to seaside drownings, but in 2019 (most recent) there were altogether 54 (fatal) drownings in Belgium according to Statista.com. This compares to 82 drownings in New Zealand according to the WSNZ Drowning Report for that year. Considering the differences in land, population and coastline area, it doesn't look like the amount of seaside is particularly relevant here.

Belgium population 11.5 million. Coast line <10% of country boundary. Drowning 54

New Zealand population 5 million. Coastline 100% of country boundary. Drowning 82

For the same drown rate per population as NZ, Belgium = 25

Belgium for the same drown rate per coast line = 540

You'd have to factor in riverbanks. Some of the worst drowning rates are central Africa nowhere near a coast.

Yup, and in the early colonial days, drowning was a very common cause of death in NZ. In rivers, not the ocean. And, indeed, it is still not uncommon for trampers or hunters to drown.

$5.80 for a medium-hot chocolate at Jamica Blue cafe at the Hospital. Just as well I was near medical professionals as I nearly had a heart attack.

Sorry it looks as if I quoted the wrong person on that.

You can drown in freshwater too. We have a much nine times the land area of Belgium, and about twice as much of our land area is covered in water.

We also have climate conducive to swimming in natural bodies of water.  Belgium ... has a climate conducive to drinking Trappist ale and eating steak and chips in a nice warm bar.

It's also instructive to review the breakdown of NZ drowning data.  2021 Report Provisional, Water Safety New Zealand  the most common place to drown is a surf beach, followed by a river.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Exactly so why compare NZ with Belgium, which is what WSNZ were doing?

Their river is the Scheldt. The coast is between Bruges and De Panne, about 50 km.

However they have twice the population who don't go and drown themselves.

Note - WSNZ figures being quoted here are 2020-21 where as the figures and "worse than the OECD" were back in 2010 and earlier.

Way off-topic trivia.  I used to be able to see the former two of those (well Knokke rather than Bruges, seeing as Bruges is inland) from my bedroom window when I was a child.

Why is no-one factoring in swimming pools? People drown in those as well. Even bathtubs.
