Just have a look at Web3 Is Going Just Great for an idea on why I don't think people should use these gimmicks.

Don't you just love US spelling?

Apparenly it stemmed from the days when US publishers paid journos & other writers by the word rather than the page, so words were often shortened to take advantage of it. Eg, cheque -> check, colour -> color, Marlborough -> Marlboro. It was also a handy way to further distance themselves from their former British masters after independence.

It was because of Noah Webster wanting to simplify and rationalize spelling, to remove superfluous letters back in the 1820s. Also to give a distinct identity that differed from the British spelling.

TBH, I tend to prefer US spelling, but that is probably a result of me needing to write it all day for work.

I prefer British, just because I get so irritated by the assumption that America is the only country in the world!

At this moment there are reports of an active shooter in Kentucky targeting cars on the highway. Apparently several people have been shot. Situation is ongoing.

freitasm: @eracode mentioned "The website says its loyalty programme is “ … partially government funded”." so I don't think they mean the network.

Correct - that is what I said - didn’t say the company is partially government funded.

On their website, under the heading “What is EthaEarn?”, they say:

The founders of Ethanet, are creating a new global loyalty programme called EthaEarn. EthaEarn is a New Zealand registered financial services provider and partially funded by government organisation Callaghan Innovation. It's a member of BlockchainNZ and it's the 'how' to Ethanet customers getting rewarded.

Why is there a recent obsession and long posts in this thread about cheque arrangements in overseas countries? WGAF?

There was a tiktok thing where people found a "loophole" that you could deposit basically anything in the banking app as a check and it would give you money straight away.

Republicans will probably be stocking up on plenty of these then.

@freitasm I also found EthaEarn’s FSP registration.

However, although Ethanet clearly says “EthaEarn is … partially funded by government organisation Callaghan Innovation.” , I have not been able to find any reference to EthaEarn on the Callaghan Innovation website.

It seems Ethanet has not launched yet because they also say:

“JOIN THE WAITLIST

Launching in Spring 2024.

If you’re in the top 1,000, you’ll get an exclusive invite at launch.

Slide in now to save your spot.”

Sure.

Today I saw the new graduate in our department, supposedly the best candidate out of 900 applicants, copy a list of numbers from Excel, ask a LLM to multiply the list of numbers by one million, then copy it back into Excel.

I weep for the future of our profession.

The real question is how many of those numbers were actualy multiplied by a million, and how many were just "hallucinated" into numbers that looked vaguely right.

I was having a little problem with my computer, so I did a search and found an article about it. All good so far. But then one of the comments could be paraphrased as "I'm not having this problem. Why did you bother publishing this article?".

I've seen main character syndrome before, but wow!

The road through Westgate in Auckland is either four or six lanes.  One of the lanes is currently closed off with cones, with a path of cones leading into it.  In the middle of the closed-off area, between multiple lanes of flowing traffic, on an elevated trailer stand, is a single portaloo.

Either someone lost a bet or they decided to set up the world's most public toilet.
