kingdragonfly: Irvine is in Orange county. It's political conservative compared to other parts of California, especially Los Angeles County. Irvine California police rank among the worst in US police scorecards for police accountability.

57 second official promo video

On the plus side, they haven't killed anyone for a number of years.

That would be very unusual. Perhaps you mean no reports of civil rights violation killings?

Mark: My kids were doing a sausage sizzle today and offered a lady a sausage for her dog (always a couple that fall to the ground), but she refused saying her dog was a vegetarian ... can they actually be vegetarians ???

Dogs can be vegans easily with no issues if the diet is good and varied. Cats, no. Cats need at least one amino acid not found in vegetable sources. Vegan cat food includes supplements (from non-animal sources of course) for that reason. Vegan cat and dog food is easily available in NZ.

The biggest storm of this time is landing in Florida. People have been asked to leave the area.

But idiots make it a partisan issue, saying it's weather engineering by the Democrats to destroy homes so they can take it over for immigrants, or for a 15-minute city project, or whatever.

Because of that, some idiots aren't leaving. Some even stand in front of the ocean. Like these (Naples Pier Cam):

I see the sign in the bottom right of your screen shot has now gone, it's looking significantly more angry there now!

The most damage from Hurricane Milton is expected along the west-central Florida coast, particularly around the Sarasota area. The storm made landfall near Siesta Key as a Category 3 hurricane, bringing destructive winds and life-threatening floods: Sustained winds of 178-208 km/h.

Further north in Florida is getting a lot of rain.

The video below was in Orlando, who appears to gotten off lightly, with a Category 1 storm, sustained winds of 119-153 km/h.

This latest hurricane in Florida will not change climate change attitudes of any politician in Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis , and former GOP presidential candidate, signed legislation that erases most references to climate in July. He has acknowledged climate change exists, but said it was too costly to reduce emissions.

Perhaps the cost of fleeing insurance companies will one day have an effect.

Anyhow Tampa Florida is a city of 3 million. It's on a very big bay that goes deep into the city.

Tampa had a reverse storm surge; the ocean plunged 1.5 meters, 5 feet. And of course there's videos of children playing playing in the lowered beaches because ... Florida.

The ocean of course returned, but gentler and slower than what you'd normally expect.

If the hurricane had tracked differently by only 50 KM, they would have had a quick storm surge of 1.5 meters that would have inundated most of Tampa.

They got very lucky, though they did get a 304 mm, a foot of rain, in a few hours

And now, based on one single piece of evidence, they are saying science is wrong, there's no risk, weather is being controlled and no need to prepare for an eventual emergency...

Chat GPT is worse than you think. It states a disclaimer that it can make mistakes, but the problems go much further than that. I have been playing with it for a time and have discovered that it just makes stuff up. It also selects random facts that don’t actually apply to the question asked. It has given me fake and misleading information about the early days of TV, which it seemed to confuse with radio in one major instance, and it also gave me completely made up details about the Under the Vines TV series. Not only does it invent stuff, but it reports its fake information with complete confidence and authority, never expressing the slightest doubt or hesitation at all. This makes it very difficult to know what to believe, unless you happen to already be an expert on the subject at hand.

Because of the way ChatGPT expresses its bullshit, I think it is dangerous and irresponsible in its present form. It comes across as credible and it is easy to be fooled into thinking it actually knows what it is talking about. In most cases its misinformation may not actually be harmful, but the potential for harm certainly exists and I strongly advise against relying on it for anything. I use it as a entertaining toy, but that is all.

Just to illustrate, here are some examples of a recent dialogue. I asked about a distinctive Hastings shop that no longer exists, but used to sell Indonesian imports. It was called the Fish Donut Shop and it sold furniture, artworks and knick-knacks. It never sold any kind of food. It was owned by two blond Kiwi sisters who had a passion for Bali in particular, but not an ounce of Indonesian blood. They may have had the odd Indonesian customer, but I don’t recall ever seeing one.

I am firmly of the belief that ChatGPT and its ilk should be used "for entertainment only". As you note, it comes up with absolute rubbish.

Is there any way to tell the difference between ChatGPT and Donald Trump?  Both of them outright lie with absolute conviction (pun intended) in the garbage they are spouting.

Prompting setup and the way the question is asked, or turning it into a series of developing questions, does make some difference to this kind of behavior. I will take a guess you are using the free product, and this is v3.5 at this time I think? Subscribers get the gpt-4 option.

gpt-4 is definitely better by default and like 3.5 better behavior can be developed with prompting.

But yes, experts agree theoretically LLMs will never be entirely immune even with the best setup although very significant improvements are possible to the behavior you're seeing in practice.
