Maybe the reference to Surfers, The Hamptons and Fiji are meant to evoke thoughts not of what they are actually like, but that they all share the commonality of sand and sea. Much like every coastal east coast town/city.

I ... can confirm that ... Ahipara is rather unlike, some may say the complete opposite of Surfers Paradise.

For example, the Gold Coast is an eastern-facing area, so the sun rises out of the ocean and sets behind the high rises.
To the contrary, Ahipara is a western-facing area, so the sun rises out of the hills (no high rises) and sets into the ocean.

So yes, complete opposites

So, pretty much like Vladivostok or Chongjin or Jangwani then.

Perhaps they were thinking of how Surfers used to be (decades ago). Even now there are still some isolated homes or small blocks of units on the waterfront.

I would disagree. Surfer's Paradise is a suburb, not a city. It's not even that big - and there are certainly no single homes left on the beachfront.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill has lent his voice to a Ukrainian air raid app to warn citizens of incoming attacks during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Invoking his beloved Luke Skywalker character, some of the lines contain recognizable quotes from the Star Wars franchise like "Don't be careless. Your overconfidence is your weakness."

I don't recognise that line at all, and when I search for it I just get pages and pages of the same air raid app story, and no references to actual Star Wars dialogue at all. Am I just forgetful, or does that line not actually exist?

Edit: It's in ROTJ, but it's only "Your overconfidence is your weakness" (spoken to the emperor). He doesn't say "Don't be careless".

Perhaps more of a warning, about pranking in the US

I have no idea what the prank was, but Youtube "pranks" are often juvenile "in-your-face" reaction pieces, not pranks.

YouTuber shot in the mall after recording prank video, says victim's family

kingdragonfly: Perhaps more of a warning, about pranking in the US

America is a country where half of the people are crazy and all of them are armed. Anyone pranking there probably deserves what they get for sheer stupidity.

I note that the father was praising god for saving his son. Pity about all those children in Nashville and elsewhere, though. I guess god just didn't think they were worth it.

"FENZ stated in an update just after 4.30pm the worst hit area was Upper Moutere, with some roads in the area, including Petra Way, closed to residents and emergency services only."

Does that mean ONLY non residents and non emergency vehicles can access it? Doh!!!

In a similar vein, that sign that says "Caution wide vehicles".

Does that mean "Wide vehicles ahead - take caution" or "Wide vehicles should take caution"?

In fact what I think it means (and what in my opinion it should say) is "Road narrows ahead".

Or you stop a wide vehicle, and give them a good telling off.
Let them off with a caution...

I knew Christchurch wants to be a "Super City" and swallow Selwyn & Waimakariri, have they taken a bite?

Rangiora listed as a Suburb of Christchurch!
