MadEngineer: Palmerston North hospital jumping and doubling down on the speak English only bandwagon.

All it’s going to do is embolden racist bigots to attack foreign language speakers in public

Everyone was ok with this before until a particular politician started talking bullshit about languages and race relations.

No different than America. Everyone was ok before until hate politics took hold and normalised the bullshitery these bigots bring.

Unfortunately not everyone was ok with it. The bigots were always around, they are just more in the open.

Yep, before Trump & Brexit came along, the bigots were dog-whistling rather than megaphoning.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

This house listing.  The first few photos are sort of OK, but then...

Painting clouds on a pale blue ceiling is a new one. Thought they were patches from water damage(?) at first.

I can't un-see the mix of HPM and PDL stainless outlets in picture 17.

That's honestly not that strange a fitout once you start to get into weird+money. I was expecting chains + stuff, especially given the listing title.

With the gold-everything bathroom I thought it might be Trump's NZ residence.

I want to buy something specific, so I went to a specialised retailer. Of the 78 products on their website, 60 are out of stock. What is the point in specialising in something if you don't actually have it?

Sometimes, it's that they can import it in the first place. If you have to buy something from an approved seller with the right paperwork, then buying it from a specialised importer is the only option, even if you could order a similar product from overseas, cheaper and faster but with no compliance data.

I could understand that... if they actually let you order the stuff. Nope, it's just there as decoration and can't actually be ordered.

Do they specialise in being out of stock?

Looking at the spec sheet for the heatsink adhesive usually sold as Stars-922 and seeing one of the materials in the composition section is "Stvengtahen Fillers".  Must be an updated composition, I'm sure they used Covfefe in the past.

This is about 6 months old, but still pretty funny.

It's not over yet. I've sent a strongly worded email with a compromise. His acceptance of the terms dictates if that thread is unlocked or not. Either way I will post an update the later today or tomorrow.

Whatever happened with that strongly worded email? Just curious. Did it have anything to do with the racist banning or was that completely unrelated?

We can't comment at the moment.

The ban on a racist comment is unrelated.

Reading the letters section in the local rag on the bus to pass the time...

Someone supports Len Brown's genius idea for a second harbour bridge from Pt.Chev, a location with no access for traffic, to Kauri Pt, a place with even less access for traffic.  The sole reason for wanting it there is Meola Reef, a meandering lava outcrop that would support a footbridge if you're lucky, which was rejected 50 years ago as impractical.

Someone's complaining about our air force and navy, and how they're going to defend us from China.  Uhh, have you looked at a world map recently?

Someone supporting the Auckland libraries position to put books on hold shelves based on randomly-assigned numbers rather than sorted by surname so you can find them.  Admittedly the papers have an obligation to publish both sides of things, and the reaction to this piece of idiocy has otherwise been uniformly negative so this may be the one exception.

This image from another thread has never been so appropriate.
