Not dumb but certainly frustrating and annoying to try and watch videos like the one in this article where the sides of the screen have been blurred.

Heartly agree.
I find even worse, the movement of blurry magnified stuff moving around that makes up 2/3 of the screen.
Well makes it very hard to see the bit that is the PURPOSE OF THE VIDEO !

Who decided that a solid neutral colour or even black stripe is a worse problem to anyone ?

Stuff embedding links to paywalled articles of overseas newspapers.

English ports have seen long queues recently due to security checks and new regulations could see those delays increase even more with the introduction of biometric passports, which uses fingerprints and facial recognition data.

They've obviously read your post, as it's not paywalled now.

From: https://www.stuff.co.nz/science/300855975/odd-spiral-appears-amid-northern-lights-in-alaska-night-sky:

"The spiral was formed when excess fuel that had been released from a SpaceX rocket <did something>", or "...was formed because of...", or "...was formed by excess..." - all of these are examples of complete sentences; unlike the one actually published.

How on earth does "sulprure" get past even the most basic spell-checking?

You imply that you think they actually DO ANY spell checking! Seems that the "media" no longer care!

Imo there are frequently used words spellcheckers [sic lol] miss. Humans get used to ignoring the failures. The double fail scenario is when someone adds a bad spelling to a global dictionary accidentally, right click menu fail or similar. Imo these kinds of fail will not last long. Enjoy it while you can. A new era of AI powered software fail will be upon us soon enough 😂

Presumably it was a really annoying stop, and the officers needed to chill a bit afterwards??
