Hard to say, but the main thing is, they are going after all waste, so over time, plastic manufacturers and retailers of all types will need new options. I feel ALL plastics need to be recyclable, as not all are

You can get vege bags which are like a cotton net. But I agree, they need to take them out of there as well.

I have seen folks with one avacado or one cucumber in individual bags. No wonder so many of these things float just below the surface of a seas and lakes

Way I understand it, The NZ Composting is based on a natural treatment. Whereas biodegradable break down to smaller units and still need to be commercially processed (which isn't done). So contaminates our compost plants.

Same reason CCC has just decided to STOP taking soft plastics in the recycle collection, due to the different plastics and bios contaminating the very narrow stream it needed to account for.

Products that don't safely degrade in a reasonable amount of time should not be allowed. Manufacturers need to be made responsible for the crap they dump on the planet. If you want to make plastic packaging, it should also be your responsibility to take it back and dispose of it. Why should manufacturers be rewarded for producing rubbish that is choking the planet?

Plastics need to be melted and re used, and remade into multi use products. If we outlawed non recyclable plastics, then all can go in the recycle bin and all be re used in NZ for NZ

One shrink wrapped cucumber in an individual bag, then put in a supermarket bag....if you're doing it, do it right.

I'm still not in the habit of remembering to take bags with me for a quick trip to the supermarket.

I can't help but laugh (or cry) when they offer to sell me a heavy duty "re-usable" plastic bag for 15c. People aren't reusing these 15c bags for subsequent shops, at that price I guarantee most of them are going straight in the bin - ironically because they are less useful than the "single-use" bags.

It's an absolute joke. I'd rather they charged me 15c for the old single-use bags, at least I CAN reuse those.

Instead of moaning about it, try to find a way to make it better. Like most people I use my car for shopping. So I have boxes in the boot. I use the shopping cart (without bags) to transfer the shopping to the car, where I load it into the boxes. It isn't rocket science.

When you recycle plastic, you still have plastic afterwards, you just have a lower grade plastic that is put into a new use. And there is a limit to how many times plastic can be recycled - ultimately, all recycled plastic finishes up in a landfill or ocean. And even biodegradable plastics damage the environment unless composted under specific conditions (which the majority aren't).

Recycling ignores the real problem - which is that there is too much single use plastic being produced in the first place. We need to reinvent our ways of consuming so that single use plastic is dramatically reduced - which is a difficult ask in our lazy consumerist age where most people seem to value convenience and disposability over acting responsibly towards looking after our environment.

Thanks for that. I am aware that some plastics cannot be recycled, but thought that if ALL plastics are recycled they can go back to a new use, such as plastic containers. In which case we only manufacture from recyclable plastic. Certainly not to manufacture single use bags. Plastic is a great product for long term uses such as containers and toys and many others.

I think lazy consumers are to blame for a lot, but lazy, stupid, thoughtless, unimaginative, uncaring manufacturers are as well. Every time I hear the bleat 'but consumers demand it' I feel rage. Here are just a couple of recent examples of manufacturer/importer/retailer thoughtlessness:

- I needed some cables so looked in the Warehouse. Row upon row of hard plastic containers with individual cables coiled up inside. The containers have no useful function whatsoever. The coiled cables could easily be put loose on a shelf or suspended from hangers. The plastic adds absolutely nothing whatsoever. Even the Warehouse manager I pointed it out to seemed embarrassed. It is a mindless stupidity.

- Practically everything, except hammers, and sometimes even those, is encased in hard plastic at hardware stores like Mitre 10 and Bunnings. Again, there is no good reason whatsoever for this. Sometimes plastic containers make sense, though in most cases alternative materials could be found. But having a plastic container for a plastic toilet roll holder or a screwdriver is just obstinately stupid. If the retailers cared at all, they could pressure their idiot Chinese suppliers to do it differently. Everyone is culpable, not just lazy consumers.

Do consumers 'demand' it? I certainly don't and I doubt that most would even notice the difference. It is done this way because at some point it started being done this way and no-one has had the courage or initiative or intelligence or sense of responsibility to change it.

Plastic is cheap, it's about cost. Which ultimately is the consumers problem. If we only used recyclable plastic, your examples go in the recycle bin, all are melted down, and re used. dafman said the recycled plastics are less quality each time, so a cool toy becomes another toy, and them the examples that you mention, the piece of plastic goes round and round, home to home. Maybe when it cannot be made into anything, it become maybe whiteware packaging, and not in small sizes, and its commonly known to send to the bin that goes to landfill as a larger piece. We should use plastic and re use and re use

I'm not moaning about needing to bring bags, I'm moaning about them offering to sell you a bag which is much worse for the environment and will likely get thrown right away.
