heavenlywild: Last night was one of my worst nights ever.

The wind was so strong I was genuinely worried about the roof going or something flying off.

Never felt this much fear before living in Auckland from the weather.

That sounds awful. Sorry you are experiencing that. Hopefully, everything is intact.

Was blustery in Remuera but didn't seem anything special. Drove to work this morning on quiet roads not covered in debris and no flooding. So far.

I think the winds have been quite localised depending on where you are in Auckland.

Based on what I have read the winds are due to swing around and may affect those that weren't affected as much from this afternoon / evening so take care out there.

Thanks, everything remained intact. Bless the building code, bless the builders who built the house etc etc. Very thankful this morning.

I wonder how many “intrepid reporters” will be sent out into the weather to report for this evening’s network news? If last night’s coverage was anything to go by, quite a few.
By all accounts, the conditions, certainly around Auckland, will be approaching their peak in time for the bulletin. It is a pathetic cliche that was started by American hurricane reporters and really adds little to the report unless you enjoy seeing reporters suffer.

It has become a standing joke in our house to guess how many “reporter on the spot” segments there are. Whether that is standing outside a darkened building where something happened earlier in the day, or on a beach with “rain stinging their face”.

I also wonder what their employer’s liability is, in terms of health and safety, by needlessly sending crews out into hazardous environments?

Just watched one reporter standing in gumboots with water up to ankles when there was plenty of dry areas to stand on.

Wellington with the sun out, waiting for storm to arrive. Admittedly am scared of the winds where we live facing the South and suspect there won’t be much sleep tonight when the house starts creaking and groaning. Can’t bear watching the glass bowing and so keep the curtains closed and wait for the roof to lift. Had one window come in years back so there is a precedent.

Wonder does taping the windows in an X actually helps at all?

This should be promoted to sticky and sent to every news outlet in NZ. We really need less dramatization in our lives right now, and this kinda thing is frustrating.

Everything that is reported, is done so to create the maximum reaction. I sort of understand it, but the last thing we need right now, is people more on edge. We need everyone to calm down and lower their general levels of stress, not just as it relates to this even, but generally.

It should do as you are disturbing the airflow and avoiding uninterrupted force

I was wondering about that too - saw the Xs on the news last night.

People were out Kite Surfing this morning, and others were filming it. Seems... Intelligent?

Which is fine, so long as we don't have to risk *other* peoples lives to save them.

Had two or three gusts at our place (we normally have them go over us) that felt like they ere going to lift the house off its foundations last night.

Other than that, it's just felt a bit like a normal winter's night (in summer).

Glad we had our internal gutters replaced late last year - we'd be leaking like a sieve with all this rain we've been having. Front garden looks pretty swampy.

I'll still remember the time we were in Queenstown the summer before last, it was 32c and then we got a weather warning that it was going to snow. We laughed out loud looking at clear blue skies and sweating profusely. Sure enough, it snowed heavily 2 days later. We went JetSkiing on the lake the following morning.

Quite a unique experience.

Now when people make crazy weather predictions, I am much more inclined to believe them.

Westpac helicopter over the Gulf this morning. These are some brave dedicated pilots and crew.
