Sorry to see that! but please do not drain the pool!

You need to follow a specific process to prevent damage to the pool

It's been crazy heavy rain all day and windy - but the latter is not as bad as it has been over the last week. Just the incessant rain!

I remember the floods on the west coast in 1988, this isn't too far off.

@xpd I am sorry to see that. Unfortunately, the rain is getting worse and will not ease off until late early morning of the 28th. Below is current state of Pak n Save Wairau park and Auckland International airport departure terminal.

@xpd that's terrible, Gavin. Certainly one heck of a weather event. A State of Emergency has now been declared.

Auckland just had 130 mm of rain in 2 hours, that is usually a months worth.

bye pool 2 - YouTube

The pool is stuffed. At that level, the silt and water get in behind the vinyl and cause it to lift etc. So will need to be drained and ripped out and decide what to do from there.... only had the new liner installed a few years ago :(

We got off light tho after watching the news.....

My teen is currently stuck upstairs at the domestic terminal, with knee-deep water downstairs as people queue to sort tickets out. Everyone seems to be settling in for the night.

"the region had recorded 249mm of rain, smashing the previous 24-hour record of 161.8mm, back in February 1985. And monthly records have also been broken - the wettest January recorded at the Auckland Airport weather station until now was in 1986 with 20cm and the wettest month ever was July 1998 with 30cm. So far this month 32cm of rain has been recorded - a “massive” amount, MetService said."

Hope your teen got it sorted out!

Ours arrived ahead of us in NZ yesterday via L.A. - guess we won't be joining them for a while.
Have to decide whether to fly home, kick the house-sitter out and collect the dog - or enjoy chilly Vancouver for (a few days?)

Thanks! He ended up getting offered a spot on a couch from someone he was chatting to at the airport, so it all worked out.

Is much cleaning up happening this morning, given there's meant to be more rain on the way?

And very poor form from Wayne Brown - way too slow to declare a state of emergency; I believe he didn't do it until quite late last night.

From the great drought and begging for hand me down water from Waikato to this.
Suppose it averages out.

West Auckland seems to have a pattern.
I remember back in Supercity was forming.
West Auckland was said to have a massive issue of old stormwater infrastructure.
Looks like further stormwater upgrades to keep up with growth of city needed.

What are the chances for an Elton John repeat tonight, weather reports seem to vary on timing of a second go around and potential intensity.

Marcus Lush on Newstalk ZB seemed to be a lifeline with callers and texters updating on closed roads etc.
It was commented that the releases they would normally get on disasters anywhere else were quite absent last night.
