Dingbatt: Dunkirk, yesterday.
Very gritty, brilliant sound stage and cinematography. An interwoven storylines that take a bit to get your head around. Not much character development due to nonstop action. Felt drained after 2 hours but an excellent watch.
8/10.

Sadly none of the cinemas around here really have adequate sound and vision to do a film like that justice. The nearest would be a 200km round trip and I am not sure that the film has yet been made for which I would do that!

The Square at the NZIFF - I wish I could give this -100/10. A lot of films at these film festivals often suffer from high levels of intellectual pretension hidden behind veils of overdone self-reference and excessive "preaching". But most are at least somewhat interesting or thought provoking in parts. This was just utter tripe and hopeless drudgery. I suppose the long-winded diatribe by the two speechmakers to mark the start of the festival was itself a bad oman. The worst was a scene where as part of some kind of gala dinner, some guy was dressed up to act like the stereotypical wild animal and proceeded to quite viciously attack a female member of the audience whilst many of the rest did little or nothing.

War For the Planet of the Apes - 5/10. The first two movies in the series were quite watchable but this one was way too long. This along with the quite unsubtle attempts at adding moral complexity and pulling at the heartstrings, plus a relatively poorly explained group of antagonists who ultimately battled the main "baddie" just turned the whole thing into a pile of muddle.

Dunkirk (2017) 9.5/10. Absolutely stunning cinematography and storytelling. Plus, it used the special effects and odd explosion judiciously to support and embellish the story. It didn't do the usual Hollywood trick of starting with a non-stop series of ever more grandiose special effects, and even bigger explosions, and then using the story almost as an afterthought to support those. Plus, Kenneth Branagh was good (as always). One of the best films I have seen in a long time.

The House (2017). 5/10. Tedious, and hokey with fairly wooden and predictable acting. Formulaic Hollywood pap. It had the odd funny moment, which is why I gave it a 5 and not a 4. Targeted at someone with the sense of humour of an 8 year old. Avoid.

The Party 8.5/10. Seen tonight at the Embassy as part of the film festival. Stellar cast (including Timothy Spall, Kristin Scott Thomas etc). A bit of a slow burner in black & white, but very funny and with a number of unexpected twists and turns. Well worth seeing.

La la land.
I managed 10 minutes of it. So this is not a full review.
Apart from the lack of story, awful bland crap musical score , formulaic acting, clichés, pretentious ambition, it could have been just another merely awful movie not worthy of further comment. I'd normally refrain from commenting on a what I think is a festering pile of dung when clearly it received more than a few very favourable reviews - but this so way overhyped it begs total ridicule. Not even laughably B grade.
My rating - zero out of 5, 10, or 100.

Dunkirk - in many way it is hard to imagine that Christopher Nolan is capable of something with some genuine artistic merit. But he managed it. The movie succeeds by just depicting the horrors and travails of war in a relatively understated way and, most importantly, eliminate verbose dialogue and pointless wisecracks. I am not sure I think that it's some mega masterpiece like many other do but it was quite enjoyable.

On another note, full marks for Hoyts Wairau Park. Those reclining chairs are great and their sound systems are consistently streets ahead of the garbage at most Events Cinemas.

There Will be Blood 9/10

Hadn't watched this for a while but what a great movie. Daniel Day Lewis in the type of part he excels in.

And for a change the background music adds to the atmosphere rather than getting in the way.

The last movie that I watched was john Wick 2 , I was such a qbadass movie,. Especially when i found out that keanu reeve really did all that training and he actually mange to learn about guns and all the action. I cant believe keanu is in his 52,but still can move like a 30 years old. I am very interested in the world in john wick 2. And I hope they will explain more in the next movie John wick 3 final chapter.

Split - John McEvoy 8/10 very engrossing, but then I like these sort of movies. Was kept wondering till the but still didn't really understand the bit about the Uncle, father, clothing, scars thing.

(Not a spoiler) It was just an overt way of telling the audience that this girl wasn't perfect, so didn't fit his purposes, so when the scar thing came up it all wrapped up nicely based on what was seen in those childhood scenes. Mostly because American audiences can't infer.

Mixed really. OK plot and patchy execution. The dialogue scenes are OK. Gal Gadot gives a solid performance as Dianna.

Many of the action scenes are cringe worthily improbable (worse than captain america) and internal inconsistencies abound.

WW is seemingly vulnerable to bullets. Fortunately automatic weapons fire is only ever directed to her shield, even when coming from multiple directions at once all bullets convenient strike her shield.

Despite being vulnerable to ballistic weapons, she can use her body as a wrecking ball against stone buildings and walk away without a scratch.

Like megan fox's character in the transformer movies, WW could crawl throguh Hades and still not have a hair out of place or a smudge on her skin. Slow mo running portrait view was perhaps the worst cinematography.

I think if you are going into this level of detail on a super hero movie by Marvel, you are probably wanting a different genre.

I don't disagree with your points, but I think a certain level of leaving reality at the door is required.

Brilliantly choreographed and edited to within an inch of its life. So good, I want to see it again.
