I hear Metlink is introducing a credit card surcharge on Snapper cards.

Now, all those recharges via the app will make public transport more expensive. Instead of trying to make it more attractive to people, they want the opposite.

We all know Wellington has excellent public transport already, so...

When you subscribe to a newsletter, and receive an email with alcohol reasonably priced, but when you click the link the bottles are actually between $2 and $15 more expensive than the email suggests.

Complained and unsubscribed.

Reminds me of going to New World the other day to find that a product's price has increased by 7.52% yet is being advertised as a "low price".

Unless you can find the product cheaper elsewhere, it technically still can be a low price.

Similar happened yesterday via email for a fresh produce site advertising beetroot for 90cents. When clicking on it, price was for one. Per kg price was $4.99

Really annoying and dishonest as all the other prices were based on similar ploys and the per kg prices were worse than the supermarket.

I hate this kind of 'marketing' scumbaggery. Push push push.

Along with christmas marketing on November 1st. The marketers just push it too hard.

We all know Wellington has excellent public transport already, so...

It’s actually worse. There’s a surcharge on debit cards as well.

From December 2nd 2024, Metlink will be introducing a 1.5% credit and debit card processing fee on Snapper apps and self-service Snapper kiosks.

This fee will apply when topping up a Snapper card or purchasing a Snapper travel pass, in the following circumstances:

  • When using a credit card/credit function at a Snapper kiosk
  • When using a credit/debit card on the Snapper app

The processing fee will be deducted by the payment provider and added to the transaction amount but not to the Snapper balance. For example, topping up a Snapper card by $20.00 will cost $20.30.

Fees-free options for topping up a Snapper card will still be available. No processing fees will be charged in the following circumstances:

  • Using an EFTPOS card at a kiosk
  • Using a debit card, selecting cheque/savings at a kiosk

This decision by Greater Wellington Regional Council, was driven by escalating costs meaning it’s no longer financially viable for Metlink to absorb these processing fees. As such, it was determined that a user-pays model would be the best option to reduce the burden on ratepayers.

For any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Metlink’s team
on 0800 801 700 or info@metlink.org.nz.

Sounds standard: surcharge on Credit card or Debit card when processed via the credit card network (online, app, credit card at terminal). Terminals don't support Paywave so you won't use a debit card in person and get hit with that fee.

No surcharge when processed via the EFTPOS network, i.e. EFTPOS or Debit card swipe or insert at a physical terminal.

It would be nice for them to support online EFTPOS.

Calling this Microsoft computer a computer is a bit of a stretch. But at least no one will steal it.

Microsoft’s New Computer Stinks

Isn't it the kind of "network computer" that Bill Gates dismissed back in the 1990s?

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

It's a terminal (er, "thin client").

It doesn't stink. It runs a remote desktop. That's all.

Ah, so more of a "dumb" terminal as they used to call it during the dial-up era.

Close.

Dial-up didn't have a "dumb terminal" unless you are thinking of BBS access (with TTY-based terminal emulators).

Dial-up ISPs used TCP/IP and accessed the Internet like today, it just wasn't always on.

It's more like the mainframe era when dumb terminals were connected via leased lines to a central computer. Add a graphical user interface to it and you have the Windows 365 Link connected to Microsoft Azure running a virtual desktop.
