With round-abouts you always have to indicate at least once at some stage, even if you're going straight ahead.
but not all round-abouts are created equal. In Rotorua there are a lot of 3 exit round- abouts that depending on which direction you are going , dont have a left exit.People still indicate to go left though. And then there are those really small ones that if you indicate left when you are going straight through then you are way down the exit road as you are indicating. i dont mind if people dont indicate on the 4 exit ones if they are going straight ahead , it's the people who have the right indicator going and then at the last moment turn the left one on and go straight through that i curse at .
But every exit on a roundabout is a left hand turn. It doesn't matter how many exits it has or where on the roundabout they are, you always turn left to exit.
When entering a roundabout you indicate exactly as you would at standard (non-roundabout) intersection. Then you indicate left when exiting.
EDIT: This link freitasm posted earlier really does explain it quite clearly.
