Baywatch. Good for a parody laugh. Don't expect actual skills. 6/10

Wonder Woman. Hmmm... drawn out, and the star trek dude was shallow and annoying. Much prefer Deadpool. 6/10

Neon Streaming. I watch The Accountant and Central Intelligence.

The Accountant is the kind of movie which evolves and explains the plot, very confusing story until the end when it all falls into place.

Central Intelligence was just stupid but enjoyable.

All Eyez on Me - Wasn't as bad as everyone made out, wouldn't watch again though - 6/10

Logan - At first I was like "what a BS way to end it for those involved", and feeling it felt like watching a crack head overdose. After letting it digest I'm itching to find out how they got to where they ended up. 8/10

Bridget Jones: Baby 2016 - on Sky - 3/5 - formula is a bit tired now but was easy on the brain

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

PhantomNVD: “The Saint” 2017 movie on Netflix.

8/10 good clean ‘old school’ Bond style light hearted fun.

I too watched this on Netflix - have to disagree 2/5 - very disappointed - not the best acting and they trundled Ian Ogilvy and Roger Moore out as a lame in house joke, what was Roger thinking I mean he was very ill at this time. One last hooray I suppose.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Over the last 5 nights I've watched all the Alien movies in order including Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Here are my ratings

Alien 9/10 Brilliant and the atmosphere it creates doesn't seem dated at all.

Aliens 6/10 IMO the weakest of the lot but still reasonably entertaining.

Alien 3 8/10 A good atmosphere with the location and characters.

Alien Resurrection 7/10 Ripley is suitably dour in this one.

Prometheus 7/10 Much slicker than the others, probably as it's much more recent.

Alien: Covenant 8/10 I hadn't seen this before and after reading some negative comments about it I wasn't expecting much but then thoroughly enjoyed it. Michael Fassbender was excellent as two sides of the same character.

Ridley Scott has generally made great movies but if you want to see him at his absolute worst watch The Counsellor (also with Fassbender). It's awful with one of the most laughable pieces of acting ever from Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz looking like her face is made from plasticine.

Watched two movies over the weekend;

Hitman's Bodyguard - Probably one of the best team ups I have seen in the last few years. A lot of laugh out lout moments 7.5/10

Alien Covenant - Not good. Not good at all. 4/10

American Made. Really enjoyed it. Had a fear going in that I might have seen the best bits in the trailer, but I was entertained the whole way through. Tom Cruise was really good in this I thought.

I'd give it a 7.5-8/10. Will watch again when released on Bluray.

The Hitman's Bodyguard, predictable, but funny and great chemistry from Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds. Salma Hayek stole every scene she was in, the sequel needs to be about her.

Logan Lucky, nice heist flick. Basically Oceans 11 with hillbillies. Worth a watch, nothing to make a big screen must-see though.

Starship Troopers - 8.5/10 (again)

I've watched this film many times (and "reviewed" it at least once or twice here), but I have to say it's still a great film 20 years later. I know lots of people trashed it (and still do), but there's a lot more going on than just a cheesy flick about space marines killing bugs. Re-watching it in the Trump era made it feel all the more topical, watching a pseudo-fascist society playing out a white supremacist allegory was chilling. I read an article recently that interviewed Paul Verhoeven about the making of the film, and he was asked about the rumours that he deliberately hired "bad" actors to accentuate the satire of the story, but he denied that and admitted that they were hired for their looks, to echo the Aryan look of the Nazi propaganda films of Leni Riefenstahl. While the set design and effects are now laughably dated, I still love rewatching this film.

And now for a confession. Please don't judge me too harshly. But based on the article I read, I decided to watch another Paul Verhoeven film which has been habitually trashed...

Showgirls - 5/10

This is one of those films that I've never got round to watching, but never felt bad about because of it's reputation as an awful film. However, as something of a Verhoeven fan, I felt obliged to give it a chance.

My first impression is that it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I watched it on Neon over a number of days (juggling caring for our new baby, household chores, work etc) so my viewing was broken into several short sessions. But in spite of that the story was largely coherent. Aspiring dancer moves to Las Vegas to "make it big", has to fight and battle her way to the top. It's filled with a number of "knowns" - Gina Gershon, Kyle McLachlan, Robert Davi - who all deliver typical sleezy, creepy performances. However the lead actress Elizabeth Berkley gives a bizarre performance, that I couldn't ascertain was character-driven or down to bad acting. She whirls from intense "passion" to borderline psychotic behaviour, often disproportionate to the situation, such that I felt whiplash each time she switched. After making it through the whole film, I have to conclude that it was bad acting.

A review of this film can't ignore the nudity, because it is (almost literally) slapping you in the face every other minute. There's so much flesh on show, it's a little overwhelming. However, where I think this film starts to show some of the "smarts" it might share with Starship Troopers is the way the nudity is handled. Verhoeven has always had a pretty enlightened approach to nudity on film. With Starship Troopers, the infamous mixed shower scene demonstrated a society that felt less bound by gender taboos; similarly the way their sports teams made no distinction between men and women. In the case of this film, rather than being titillating, I think the bombardment of nudity is designed to represent the desensitization that people who work in that "industry" (topless dance shows in Vegas) must feel, not to mention the audience. There's no real eroticism in the way it shows off the naked cast, and while it might be argued as being exploitative or gratuitous, I think this is deliberate and part of the film's message. I think it uses the desensitization to show how that leads to a devaluing of other humans. The horrific and brutal rape scene near the end of the film shows the culmination of this approach, and it is powerful in how much revulsion it generates. I found that part of the film particularly difficult to endure.

However, any "smart" message that the film musters up can't really make up for the whole mess. While certainly not as bad as it was made out to be, and not as bad as I expected, it certainly isn't a good film and not something I ever feel the need to watch again.

I agree with these movies being pretty great movies I would put Aliens with a higher score and drop points off Prometheus but Alien Covenant was good and I feel it didn't deserve the negative comments....although I would probably say that it was Fassbender that made the movie what it was. I too would have scored it 8 out of 10.

I saw "An Inconvenient Sequel: Speaking Truth to Power".

Al Gore updates us on the fight to save humanity from itself.

The movie is a mix of updated urgency on the climate emergency.....as seen through the lens of the life and career of Al Gore.

He's been working on this for 40 years. He's got to be one of the most committed people around.....and trying almost desperately to get people everywhere to realise the very real danger they - we - (and all who come after us) are in.

Some of the people are really stupid and others are greedy and stupid. They feature in the movie. Some of them are very powerful which makes their ignorance and stupidity dangerous and harmful.

Al Gore wonders why he shouldn't just give up.

But he doesn't. He cares more about our future than most of us do.

2nd tier = not as good as first outings, but pretty good nonetheless
