MurrayM:

I did the Stuff quiz this morning and there was a question of how many bits in a byte.

I was shocked to see that over half the people that took the quiz thought the answer was 1000!

Only 25% knew the correct answer.

It doesn't actually have a "true" correct answer. While most (all?) modern computers use 8-bit bytes, I'm aware of older systems with 6-, 7- and 10-bit bytes.

freitasm: People come up with the most absurd words to justify the shitness of their actions. For example, the City of London Corporation decided to close the meat and fish markets running for 850 years.

That's because the City only really cares about money, and in any case is way too busy acting as the global laundromat for (mostly) Russian organised crime, which includes not clamping down on said crime because it's good for business.  Recommended reading: "Butler to the World: How Britain Helps the World's Worst People Launder Money, Commit Crimes, and Get Away with Anything" (despite its terrible-sounding title, which does however describe the contents fully), and even more so "Kleptopia" (Economist book of the year, and very depressing reading).

While it's still free to watch (I saw it at the NZIFF several years back):

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

From Kogan Mobile's support staff:

As you are a valuable customer please allow me some time to check with my supervisior to check what best we can do.
Please allow us 24 working hours.

Curious whether that means 3x 8 hour days, 2x 12 hour days (as their chat is open 8am-8pm), or just 24 hours...

Also, be warned that plans do not auto-renew as 30 day plans; they will charge you for another year, even if it was originally bought as a code.

Ah, very true! I'd forgotten about those old ones, but I think they should be long dead by now (along with my use for counting in octal).

Latest advert for Jaguar cars. Something's missing, but I can't put my finger on it.

The wordmark looks like an accidental child of the Pepsi logo.

I'm surprised at the 'controversy' for a low volume high maintenance luxury car marque most people will never own.

They did manage to sell 400,000 cars last year. That is more volume than I was expecting.

The badge update looks modern lux and international to me. Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent.

Jr as a logo for Jaguar. Really? Where ever did that come from? Some designer fresh out of design school with no idea about Jaguar? I think they've just said goodbye to all those who bought Jaguars previously.

Looks like a nondescript logo you might see on a piece of clothing certainly not some thing you'd ever think of putting on a sports car with Jaguars's history. Someone has lost the plot.

New beach front house at Piha (NZ Herald full story)

Since being assailed by this kind of design beginning in the 90s I started thinking architecture should really do something for human feeling in the environment. A big blank wall in your face is not great for the imagination. As an occupier I'm sure I'd be very happy with it.

Preparing for sea level rise and eventual inundation?

And I wonder how they did the earthquake modelling for that design?
