I'm not moaning about needing to bring bags, I'm moaning about them offering to sell you a bag which is much worse for the environment which will likely get thrown right away.

Just goes to show, for them it's not about the environment, it was just another way to generate revenue.

We have a supply of bags in each of our cars. We have been using these bags for a long time and none are in need of replacement. If something spills in them they are cleaned and they are also cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. The bag hold more than single use plastic bags, easier to carry and don't dig into your hands and don't tear open. We have been using our own bags for a long time.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Just goes to show, for them it's not about the environment, it was just another way to generate revenue.

It's about them wanting to look like they are doing something, but without it requiring any effort or expense on their part. Selling us the alternative bags is a nice bonus for them.

Are you talking about the 15c plastic ones? In my view these are only purchased when people forget their "proper" re-usable bags, then discarded.

A 15c item is treated as a disposable by most people.

I don't. But the fact that they are selling them makes a mockery of the whole thing.

EDIT: I personally never had a problem with single-use plastic bags, as in my experience they were almost always re-used for other things. But if supermarkets seriously want to reduce plastic use, then actually commit and try to make a real difference.

We have ( I have) purchased one of those multi use plastic bags when I forgot to take my own bag in with me and it was too much of a mission to take the chair out and back for one bag. I now use the multi use plastic bag to store all teh other material bags in my car.

I have the boxes in the boot, but I take them into Pak'n'Save with me. When I get to the checkout, I quickly place them in the trolley ahead, and the checkout operator packs them for me. It's no extra labour for the operator, and it's much quicker for me, important out in the carpark on a cold, wet, winter's night. This practice is far superior to using bags (of any type) IMO. Banana boxes are the best, two occupy a large trolley nicely, and they last for years. They can get a bit heavy sometimes, 20 kg or so, but that's not a problem for me.

I've been doing this for 20 years or so. I'm stumped as to why other shoppers don't do it. Maybe they think it's cheating on the cheap prices for packing yourself deal somehow.

Supermarkets dont want to reduce plastic use, they want to sell groceries at large mark ups. It's 'the public' who want to reduce plastic use and the supermarkets wont do a damned thing until they are, like most businesses, forced to do so.

i think many posters are cynical about the new bag ban because saving a few super-thin disposable bags seems minor compared to having almost every single supermarket item in those bags wrapped in plastic.

I think you need to be philosophical about that and remind yourself that a journey starts with a step in the right direction. You can also avoid some products which are over wrapped - are you gonna buy a bag of oranges or some loose ones next to them ?

Eventually businesses will be forced to do more to reduce the plastic problem THEY cause but not until more people act like they give a sh*t.

I've always been amused by pre-grated cheese (how hard is it to grate cheese?) but I am totally lost for words with people who are too lazy to remove the outer layer of an onion?!

They could have used paper bags for those onions. As for pre grated cheese I get that, it can be impossible for folks with hand disabilities to grate cheese. There are many days that I could not do it. Pealing potatoes, and Onions is also difficult but there are machines for potatoes I have never seen one for onions.
