I wonder how many “intrepid reporters” will be sent out into the weather to report for this evening’s network news? If last night’s coverage was anything to go by, quite a few.
By all accounts, the conditions, certainly around Auckland, will be approaching their peak in time for the bulletin. It is a pathetic cliche that was started by American hurricane reporters and really adds little to the report unless you enjoy seeing reporters suffer.

It has become a standing joke in our house to guess how many “reporter on the spot” segments there are. Whether that is standing outside a darkened building where something happened earlier in the day, or on a beach with “rain stinging their face”.

I also wonder what their employer’s liability is, in terms of health and safety, by needlessly sending crews out into hazardous environments?

TV One has been doing those stupid live crosses for years. Here I am standing near the spot where someone may have done something criminal yesterday. Or here I am where the water came all the way up to here. Or here I am outside the hospital where someone had an accident. Yady yady ya. Hey, there you are where someone has a TV studio.

Ok I’ve checked it out and apparently taping windows is not recommended and is a myth because if window breaks it will be into bigger shards. Security window film is recommended instead.

So much for that idea.

You forgot the live cross to someone in the newsroom in a different part of the building. It's just showing off that they can do it and adds no value to presenting the story.

not really. its not about the wind flow thats going across the glass. its all about the pressure generated from the wind pushing against it at right angles.

it just comes down to glass thickness. however most windows break because of debris hitting it. only thing you can do is board it up. ie storm shutters.

Wooden storm shutters is something I would kill for living in the heights facing South but they aren’t a thing in NZ. There’s an idea for someone smart to jump on to. Even if it was a removable shutter that you could hang up and screw down each storm.

We had a window break one year and the glass shard shot almost 4 meters across the room and imbedded itself in the opposite wall into the wood. Still there today. Since then have always kept the curtains closed in storms and stay in a back room that we turned into a safe sitting room.

If you don't want them as a permanent feature you can make & install 'lift off hanging hinged shutters'

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yeah, there is a balance to be had, that isn't quite right I don't think. Having said that, given the popularity of MAFS and other reality TV, I am wondering if it might be outside the reach of a number of viewers to get more than 15 seconds of facts per 10 minutes of viewing :)

Auckland hasn't got the Cyclone yet I don't think, or at least only the outer fringes, it's looking likely it will be later tonight before things get really hairy. I saw a report this morning it was 400KM's away?

Rain has gotten heavier in the last 90 minutes here, and if there is long periods of heavier rain, I can definitely see some flooding occurring in the next 12 hours.

The wind around Titirangi have increased, just had to head out and you can see the spray from the road whipping about in the blustery wind.

Yes, for those guys & girls to be out on a day like today means that some poor person has had a very, very bad day already and urgently desperately needed retrieval.
I'd guess there'd be a lot of umming and ahhing before the decision to fly a rescue helicopter was made
