I can understand why as some people didn't use them properly, but when I read about people down the line and not having any electric power for a number of days, you'd be pretty stuffed/cold/frozen if you didn't have any other means of heating.

Is that true? I live in an old farmhouse. The room I spend most of my time in, where the computers are, would be unbearable without the gas heater. Electricity is not a viable option. I tried that in the past. An ordinary electric heater does not warm the space and is much too expensive for continuous operation. It would also place an unsafe load on our old wiring, which is a lot riskier than the gas heater next to me that I never leave on when I leave the room. If I can't buy a replacement heater when the current one dies I might as well burn down the house. This idiocy really makes me angry. When did this happen?

Btw carbon monoxide detector $50 at the warehouse. Has a digital readout, but no display below 30ppm. Low levels it is designed to tolerate for a long time before activating. High levels it will go off immediately.

Edit: On the plus side there is now a bigger market for flued heaters and new gas installations will use these as standard instead of the 'plug in' unflued type. Larger market, price will drop.

An unflued heater costs $100 or so. A flued one would mean tearing out a wall or two storeys of ceilings and many thousands. Not all of us are as well remunerated as the politicians who make these kinds of decisions.

Many politicians behave more civil than a lot of non politicians do. Some seem to think that political discussions or someone holding an opposing political view is licence to throw manners and respect out the window.

If youve seen how bad some people are at cutting corners around Auckland then you would understand why people stop well back from the line if they value their car.

Today:

I saw a video the other day of someone that had stopped like that. A pedestrian attempting to cross jumped up and walked across the bonnet. Subsequent pedestrians did the same. The car then reversed into the proper position.

This morning, in front of Te Papa. Minutes before the car stopped in the middle of the street. He wouldn't move. People started making noise. He jumped out of his car and started shouting at people. When he moved he did so very slowly into the bay in front of the museum, intentionally blocking the traffic. Even the taxi drivers walked to the window to tell the guy to stop being a dick.

He is a dick. His wife was in the car and not impressed.

I've done that once - in Sydney CBD at rush hour when a spider about the size of a medium dinner plate dropped off the sun visor on to my lap. I don't think I was being a dick - cautious and prudent.

The guy was being a dick. He got out of the car in the middle of the road to shout and give fingers. He then walked back to his car and drove into the bay INTENTIONALLY VERY SLOWLY. Then he stopped, with people still making noise behind him, got out of the car again to shout more, then took off.
