This worldwide Dubai chocolate hype. It's not the chocolate but what people ignore just to ‘belong’ to the illustrious circle of those who have been able to get hold of an overpriced, artificially scarce, apparently wannabe luxury consumer good(!). People, all such people go to the polls! Marketing manipulation at its best! 🤡

Kiwi sex toy company Girls Get Off claims to have been denied a BNZ business account - NZ Herald

My WTF moment is not about BNZ. They are being stupid, sure. But my WTF is about this paragraph:

Banking is not the only area where the brand has faced additional hurdles. Girls Get Off has also faced “pushback” when it comes to social media, Conway said, as tech giant Meta, which owns and operates Facebook and Instagram, has strict policies on what advertising is permitted on its platforms. Its community standards prohibit ads depicting or signifying “sexually suggestive activities”, including masturbation.

You tell me the online platform that harbours scammers and accepts money to push ads with false claims has some "morals" when it comes to human things like this?

FFS.

Facebook/Meta has long been tough on breastfeeding pics & other "sexual" content, but neo-Fascists & other hatemongers get the kid gloves.

You hear similar things about places like Patreon and Paypal, as well as payment providers and banks not wanting to deal directly with sex workers; they want to only ever deal with a brothel or strip club that takes a 50% cut.

Charitable explanation is that they can off-load the compliance burden to the business (not that that applies here...), less charitable version is that the writing and enforcement of the policies is set up to promote exploitation.

Pop culture gone amuck.

"How a Star Trek Fan Gets Traffic Violations Without a Car

A woman's love of Star Trek seems to have put her in an unusual and an expensive situation. Beda Koorey, 76, told her story to WCBS in New York. She says she was such a fan of the show she made the starship Enterprise's number NCC 1701 her license plate. She says she gave up driving in 2020 and surrendered her plates. Unfortunately, other possible-Star Trek enthusiasts are able to purchase a fake license plate with the same number online"

Take an administrative court action against the authority that accepted or confirmed the deregistration and forward all tickets to them - done. But here is not America. 😉

Yes. Comments I read somewhere else were in that direction. Sue the DMV for not updating their database and causing distress and financial damage.

It seems that other States are using stale data that they've cached.

"The New York Department of Motor Vehicles says novelty plates being used illegally on the roads is a matter for law enforcement, and nothing in its system connects Koorey to her former plate.

The DMV also said that it's up to each state and billing entity to make sure it is utilizing the most up-to-date New York DMV data"

I'm surprised that the only option was to surrender the plate rather than sell it to another Star Trek fan.

Went to Courtenay Place for dinner on Saturday night and could not find parking. Had to park in the Bunnings car park which relies on an app to be able to pay.  Tried to install the app on my Pixel 8 and it said app not available in my region (my phone has a US account - long story) and had to use my wife's iPhone. That worked but what a terrible app.

Putting that aside, why geolock a parking app?  What happens to a tourist who wants to park their rental and find they cannot install the app?  That is just plain idiotic behaviour.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

I had exactly the same issue in the US recently trying to download an app to pay for EV charging. Makes nonsense whatsoever.

Not to mention the idiocracy of only being able to change your location once every 12 months with google.

Getting a bit OT but my biggest beef about this geo locking is not being able to install the Lotto app :-(  I have to sideload it.

I asked a developer and the reason is trademarks. They will not be able to use that name in the other countries as they do not have a trademark on it, so they are not allowed to sell it to other places.

Which would explain why you cant browse and search for it but IMO a direct link to it should still allow installations, but apparently not allowable.

That was added to deal with some widespread abuse of the system at the time, can't remember the details but it's not just an arbitrary decision.
