I saw Thor Ragnarok at the Roxy over the weekend. I enjoyed it a lot. Definitely the best Thor film, probably one of my top 3 MCU films. The kiwi humour was great to see and hear. And the film opened with a little skit thanking all the Mikes out there so I felt pretty spesh about that :)

It was visually beautiful. Very colourful in some places, bleak in others, but so well rendered and realised that I was convinced that these places were real. Great to see Hulk has learned to talk and developed his personality. Hard to deal with Chris Hemsworth from time to time since he's just a walking set of abs and isn't a strong actor, so his comedic sensibilities are a bit....stretched.

Either way, very cool and fun film, great one for kids and adults alike.

White guy in touch with his outdoors man helps Indian police and white FBI agent solve crime involving Indians on Indian reservation. Could easily have been Indian role/actor.

Not like there's a huge number of significant Indian roles in movies...

Fair point. Graham Green, who played the reservation police chief, could have easily been the lead assisting the FBI. That said, in my view, Jeremy Renner put in the performance of his career to date.

Agreed, I didn't think oh it's "that guy from the avengers" or hurtlocker. It was a very moving performance. And how about THAT action scene, so subtle and mind blowing :-O

Enjoyed Spider-Man Homecoming this evening.

i am not a star trek fan but enjoyed the new star trek going dark on us. Finally some darkness onboard ( the new captain). However it is variable. Good episode, boring episod.e THe first episode almost had me never watch again. the second and third hooked me in - patchy since then.

Liked Jeremy Renner in Hansel and Gretel - witch hunters. good solid fantasy with no expectations of any learning or thought provoking parts involved.

Totally agree. Taika Waititi did a great job directing this and also being "Korg" the stone thing. It was much funnier than previous Thor movies....and that's a good thing.

I saw "Blade Runner 2049" a couple of days ago. If you liked the original Blade Runner, you''ll like this. It's a worthy sequel. It feels the same......and that's a good thing.

It's set in a world where the climate deniers won and the Earth is more or less wrecked. Los Angeles continues to exist behind high sea walls, while much of the land around it is flooded and laid waste by eco-system collapse in 2021, as the climate degraded and industrial society poisoned the planet. Maybe 20 years early, but not unrealistic....especially if bees continue to disappear at the rate they are globally.

"Replicants" are essentially robotic human look-alikes, and after the events of the first movie (set in 2019) they have been prevented from disobeying through rigorous testing and elimination.

The current evil owner of the what's left of the collapsed Tyrell Corporation takes being a bad man to a new level. The insane billionaire is becoming something of a movie cliche.......but then maybe that part is actually documentary (I have the amoral and essentially evil Koch brothers in mind there).

Like the original movie, it's darkly optimistic. Though human failure and wreckage is everywhere......there is the occasional success.

I saw "A Ghost Story" a few days ago. Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as the married couple ("C" and "M") at the centre of the plot.

There isn't much dialog all the way through. The situation and relationship of the central couple is revealed, little by little, as the film progresses.....mainly from the point of view of the dead "C" as he haunts their home after he dies in a car accident. After he dies, he is left on a mortuary table....and jerks upright with the mortuary sheet still covering him head to toe. It never comes off.

Time passes. M moves on. Years go by......and the world around the house changes. "C" isn't really C anymore. He's a faint whisper of himself in life.

It's a really cool story.....though slow. I found that in the end it was worth it. Probably needs a second viewing to pick up on all the little details.

The ending is.....well....I won't spoil it. But it's cool.

I saw "Geostorm" a few days ago.

The special affects are great. The acting is adequate. The plot is ...well......pretty dumb and formulaic...and don't bother too much about the science of it all.

But it's a disaster movie and lots of people die and cities get smashed and there's an evil conspiracy and....yeah, whatever. On that level, you get your money's worth.

I think the best actor in the whole film was the 13yo daughter of the main character. The rest were more or less cartoon-like.

Actually....this movie should have been animated. Yes.

See it on Cheap Tuesday if you have absolutely nothing else to do.

Thor: Ragnarok - 8/10

First time back at the movies in a while, I managed to see the new Thor film yesterday. It's fair to say that it is a lot of fun, and very enjoyable to watch. As others have already said, there was a welcome injection of comedy into the story which made it feel more like the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Especially when you add in the palettes used, and the "galactic" scenery which gives it a more universal feel than the earth bound MCU films.

I do have some notes, which I wouldn't label as gripes but might be perceived by others as complaints. Firstly, the Kiwi-ness of the film, especially the humour. I guess it's because I'm a kiwi that I noticed it, whereas most of the international market would just see it as quirky humour, possibly even "Flight of the Conchords"-style humor. It wasn't a problem as such, but it did take me out of the story a few times when I noticed it. A good example is Korg, voiced by director Taika Waititi. A big, lumbering stone creature with an ... "unexpected" voice. It was funny when it happens, and the joke gets the desired reaction, but every time he appears I can't help but hear/see Taika. As I said, it's not a gripe as such, but something that takes me out of the film because I noticed it. Also, it didn't feel like a "Thor" film. I might be in the minority, but I really enjoyed the previous Thor films - the first more than the second - so I wasn't pinning so much expectations on this to be the "best" Thor film. It certainly is the funniest, but a lot of that humour comes across a bit like a fan film - as if Taika decided to make a fan Thor movie and just happened to stumble upon Hemsworth, Hiddleston, et al and they all decided to have a bit of fun. And then someone had some really fancy computer to do all the graphics to make it really pop, while someone else was great with composing and offered to do the music. In the same way that those fan-made films can be great, this felt great. But it also didn't really feel like a big budget film, until you see those big action set pieces. There are some similarities to the Deadpool movie in this regard.

The combination of these elements do add up to one other "note" - it feels inconsequential. Maybe I've just become indoctrinated by Marvel's sweeping cinematic universe where all the films all feed into the next, but Ragnarok felt like a one-shot film. Keeping with my "not a gripe" theme, this can be a good thing. I think there's definitely a case to be made that Marvel have oversaturated their connected universe, and so having a fun, one-off film is refreshing. But again, noticing that while watching the movie pulled me out of the story. Maybe I just need to switch the brain off a bit more often when watching these films...

Justice League.
Despite what critics have said, I really enjoyed it. Simple storyline, setting the foundation for future JL movies. It introduced the characters that hadn't had their own movie with just enough backstory. I liked it more than either Wonder Woman or Batman vs Superman .
Not as humorous as Marvel's latest offering, but I don't think it set out to be. And was probably better for it.

agreed. i went in not expecting much, and i mostly enjoyed it. way better than Batman vs Superman. Ben Affleck as Batman was really really good. He seemed like Batman from the comics a lot more this time. Probably the best Batman I can recall seeing in live action, not perfect but a great step in the right direction.

However regarding Flash and Cyborg, very much meh. I really didnt like the Flash. Aquaman was alright, but not great. See how he does in the standalone movie next year.

Gotham looked great this time, right colours for it (BvS everything was dusty and orange, stupid zack synder).

Bad guy was forgettable, and it was very much a poor mans avengers, similar baddy (guy with horns, loki had a horn helmet) and a alien army.

But despite all that, I enjoyed it. Good pace, good length, funny at times. If only Joss Whedon had written and directed it from the start.... imagine how good it would of been....

The fact that the studio limited the movie to no more than two hours meant the was no more room for character introduction. Most fans will be familiar with Flash's backstory, not so much for Aquaman or Cyborg.
I thought the manic way Barry Allen's character was played by Ezra Miller provided some great comic relief, and fitted well with a superhero that operates at high speed. Likewise, the way Jason Momoa played Aquaman as such a laid-back character provided a nice counterpoint to the intensity of other main characters. Cyborg was perhaps the character that needed a little more, well, character. (Edit: Maybe this was done because he is mainly machine anyway).
The villain didn't need much more development. He is, afterall, only the sidekick of the main villain coming in the next JL movie (called Doomsday, I think). He only needed to be something to get the Justice League together.

Worth seeing on the big screen.

I plan to see this on Monday - is it stand -alone, or do I need to watch Thor - The Dark World, or the Avengers Age of Ultron ?

I havent delved too far in the the Marvel Universe, other than the Iron Man series, maybe one or two others in the Thor-y of Everything. Couldn't really get in the Agents of SHIELD, nor Agent Carter.

My wife is in no way a Marvel Universe fan but enjoyed the movie as a stand alone piece of entertainment. So a backstory not essential but does allow you to pick up more in the subtext. A working knowledge of the Aussie movie "The Castle" will also bring a laugh or two.
