Dingbatt: My wife is in no way a Marvel Universe fan but enjoyed the movie as a stand alone piece of entertainment. So a backstory not essential but does allow you to pick up more in the subtext. A working knowledge of the Aussie movie "The Castle" will also bring a laugh or two.

Yep, Thor Ragnarok was good - I'd give it 7/10. Couple of references to backstories, but nothing that was essential.

Did pick up the refernce to The Castle - I re-watched The Castle on the weekend. Not as funny as first time round. Probably a bit dated.

Co-incidentally, the music was done by Mark Mothersbaugh, of Devo fame, and I was listening to a bit of Devo - Freedom Of Choice Live Album, on the morning that I went to see Thor.

Murder on the Orient Express 6.5/10

Pretty well acted, Amazing cast, classic story (which I'd never read) but ultimately I just couldn't get past the fact it was disappointing compared to what I'd expected. Maybe I expected too much.

If you know the ending, then I am not sure it's worth watching.

Saw Mindhorn on Netflix the other day...kind of rubbish and thoroughly enjoyable.

If you like dour, cheesy English comedy, which is slow at times, I recommend it.

Live by Night.

Ben Affleck is great playing one-dimensional characters like 'The Accountant' but is unable to pull off more complex or nuanced roles. We didn't even make the first hour of this movie before giving up. The Godfather or Scarface this is not. Don't bother.

If...

1968 movie from Lindsay Anderson starring Malcolm McDowell still holds up well even after all this time. McDowell is superb as the rebellious public school boy who can't be made to toe the line.

I think I mentioned Mindhorn months ago, if not, I should've... totally OTT and hilarious!

Today was a rewatch of Serpico, and Logan Lucky.

Some pretty good acting.

Funny seeing Meg Ryans son and Brendan Gleesons son playing the other "bang brothers".

Better than I expected. 7.5/10.

Last night watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

Oh dear, predictable and 'B' grade acting. On the plus side the CGI was great. I thought Weta studios had had a hand in it but looks like it they come out of France and Italy. CGI very Avatar like.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Justice League - I enjoyed it. I cant discuss in detail what i loved without giving away spoilers but i'll say its miles ahead of BvS and Suicide Squad.

Its not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination. It has problems with pacing, CGI and a very poor villain but worth a watch if you like these kind of movies - 6.5/10

One side note, in a couple of scenes where Flash is running, it looked really weird like he is figure skating or something. Is it just me or did someone else find that a bit off?

I agree with your sentiments but would give it a 7.5.

The Flash was poorly cast. Being a big fan of the TV series, Grant Gustin is a better flash. I also didn't really like his movement etc. I felt this way about the latest spiderman as well, Tom Holland is a horrible choice.

And like the 60s he's somewhat terse with his woman (Jacqueline Bisset beautiful there). One thing to note is the lack of dialog. The very few exchanges are there to help solve the case. Still a good movie but certainly dated.

bullit was all about the car chase - no dialogue needed

watched a few films featured in the terror fi filmfest.

68 kill - violent, gorey, funny 7/10

jungle - harry potter gets lost in the jungle zzz 4/10

the villainess - luc besson did it so much better with nikita 3/10

speaking of luc, had a mini-luc-fest

valerian - this will become a small cult classic 7/10

the new remastered fifth element 9/10

and the little known extraordinary adventures of adele blanc-sec 8/10

I watched this again recently as well. The car chase doesn't really hold up any more compared to modern day stunts (think Bond) but Steve McQueen had a hell of a lot of screen presence. A 1960's Brad Pitt.

A Clockwork Orange 9/10

Nothing like a bit of the old ultraviolence. Malcolm McDowell is terrific and makes a lot of todays tough guys seem tame by comparison.
