I can understand why as some people didn't use them properly, but when I read about people down the line and not having any electric power for a number of days, you'd be pretty stuffed/cold/frozen if you didn't have any other means of heating.

Is that true? I live in an old farmhouse. The room I spend most of my time in, where the computers are, would be unbearable without the gas heater. Electricity is not a viable option. I tried that in the past. An ordinary electric heater does not warm the space and is much too expensive for continuous operation. It would also place an unsafe load on our old wiring, which is a lot riskier than the gas heater next to me that I never leave on when I leave the room. If I can't buy a replacement heater when the current one dies I might as well burn down the house. This idiocy really makes me angry. When did this happen?

Not too sure when this happened - I purchased a delonghi 4200W burner a couple of years ago from Bunnings or Mitre10, and just sold it on TradeMe last night, for about $140.00, which was $50.00 less than what I had paid for it.

I sort of recall the sales person advising that these were the last of the stock, and no more was being imported.

The lady who purchased it mentioned that she could no longer get them from the major hardware chains, and sure enough, nothing listed anymore.

I still have my tabletop outdoors gas heater - I'll be hanging into that.

Crazy stuff - buy as many LPG gas heaters as you can, clean them up. Flog them off during cold winters - you'll make a killing !!

Even more crazier, people will be hanging on to their old dunger LPG heaters, with cracked hoses and dodgy seals, making probable non-problem into a potentially really dangerous one. The law of unintended consequences strikes again !!!

What's worse, is that people will now buy outdoor only LPG heaters, and use them indoors. Yet most outdoor only LPG heaters chuck out tonnes of carbon monoxide. So it is actually very important that if a gas appliance says to only use outdoors - only use it outdoors. So not having portable gas heaters suitable for indoor use, available at reasonable prices. Will almost certainly cause more deaths.

But since virtually everything nowdays comes with pages of warnings and notices and lists of do's and dont's. Often people can't tell which ones they must follow for safety Vs which ones are just written by lawyers trying to cover every possible scenario where someone might injure themselves.

And there are lots of areas where unflued LPG heaters are definitely cheaper to run than plug in electric heaters. (due to electricity being too expensive) And if you are in a rental property, it won't be feasible to install a heatpump or a flued gas heater. Sure they are a bad idea in a modern well sealed house. But in draughty old houses, the draughts mean that moisture build up is rarely an issue.

If you do want a flued gas heater - the Rinnai Energysaver gas heaters are the easiest to install, if you can place them against an external wall. As they just have a mushroom like flue terminal on the outside wall.

Perhaps it will make crap landlords sort out the electrics in disaster rentals since they cant just tell people to use a portable LPG heater as they can at the moment.

Good examples are places with all of the power points wired with 1.5mm cables. Which have a max rating of 15A, Which are then looped between multiple rooms. So you can't use heaters that output more than 1.5KW or so in multiple rooms at once. Without overloading those circuits.

And the best one I have seen - a 3 bedroom 70s house with just 2 powerpoint circuits on the switchboard for the whole house. And no fireplace or other fixed heating installed in the house.

Then they are not fit for living in if they cannot be safely heated. Up till now if you bitched about breakers tripping out landlords could just say to get a gas heater, which IMO is a stupid thing to use in a house but it was all they had to say. If they are no longer available and you cannot heat the house to a decent temperature (not expecting a nice 24 degrees, but at least 18 or so) then they house shouldnt be rentable till that is resolved.

Unreliable apps

Genesis. The app can go for days without updating the daily kWh/$ usage. Then its fully up to date. Then it doesn't show yesterday. In a couple of days it probably will

MetService. Since it went to the free only version, it frequently tells me I am offline. I'm not. This is frequent as in right now, and a few times during every week . It used to be once every month

I remain continually amazed that such houses are not condemned by Councils as Unfit For Human Habitation - or does no such thing exist in NZ legislation?

I hate that new MetService App! Mainly because I'm still pissed that they stole the one I paid for!

I suspect the Genesis issue isn't a Genesis issue. I see similar things with Electric Kiwi and I had that with Contact a few years back too. I suspect it's the meter/lines company.

+10 for this. Very good points. I have been there myself (being unnecessarily alarmed by excessive warnings and for that reason ignoring subsequent ones).
