Dial111: Took kids to see the new Jumanji movie
Can't help but feel anything with The Rock in it sinks!
Kids liked it that was the main thing, has nothing on the old one IMO
I actually fell asleep at one point and this was the 10:40am screening
I don't see how you could ever improve on the original. A classic and Robin Williams at his absolute best.

You can't improve the original, which is why this one is a completely different movie with the same name. It's all based on video games instead of board games. Kids today don't know what board games are.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 7/10
I really enjoyed this film; it had action, humour, and also a good child-friendly message about needing to work together to overcome obstacles, too. And fun to see Rhys Darby chewing the scenery in another great supporting role (albeit a brief one).
And personally, considering his background as a Wrestler basically meant he's been acting for years, I think Dwayne Johnson carries the film quite well. All of the main leads did a great job of portraying their characters as actually being High-school kids trapped in older bodies. And Jack Black giving flirting lessons was certainly a sight to behold!
Was it perfect? Of course not; but I laughed a fair bit, and it kept me nicely entertained without drawing me out of the film with plot stupidity and/or bad physics (looking at you, "Last Jedi"!), which is all I need for this sort of film.
Edit: Why does Geekzone always give me grief with URLs? Sigh...
Wind River. I thought it was quite well done and surprised me with a good story.

It's available on DVD. If we lived in the good old days you could simply wander down to you local store and rent it. If you live in Wellington, you are lucky, Aro Street video have it to rent. If you don't live in Wellington, Aro Video will have it available to post to you to rent from March 13. Here is the link.
And +1 for the movie, I thought it was great.
My son and I watched the Hitmans Bodyguard the other night. A lot of foul language (and not always necessary) but Jackson and Ryan Reynolds had good chemistry and while the action was OTT a bit, it was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes but I don't really ever take much notice of their ratings.
Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD. https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
Pirates of the Carribean - Dead Men Tell No Tales:
Not too bad...a standard POTC flick, but a little darker in places.
Overall, it was enjoyable without being great.
6/10

Did some long distance flying this month and watched a few movies I would have otherwise missed.
"The Girl on the Train" (2016)
Email Blunt is the main character and she does an outstanding job.
We join the story as a woman no a train explains her life and growing fascination with a "perfect" couple she see from the window of her passing commuter train.
The details are slowly revealed and we learn more and more about the people concerned.....and how things may not always be as they appear.
I really liked this movie. NO way would I have ever gone to the cinema to see it with the lame synopsis used by promoters to describe it.
The acting was uniformly good.
I highly recommend this movie. It gives up it's secrets slowly and then in bursts....and there are more than a few surprises along the way.
9/10 (If I like it, it gets a great score....)

wind river is a little gem, well worth a look
not so much the snowman, another sleepy scandanavian crime thriller, short of thrills with a wasted western cast.
with the hitman's bodyguard nz bd buyers get shafted again with a dts-hd ma release, whereas the American release was in dolby atmos.
region a locked though :(
The Greatest Showman 10/10 What a stunner this movie is. Amazing. I would consider this a *must* see. Perfect date night movie. Great Soundtrack (featuring a Kiwi who won a Golden Globe Award for best song which it deserved).
Wonderful, highly recommended. 10000x better than LA LA Land which was crap IMO.

I would agree that the film is visually stunning and a pleasure to listen to as well - in fact, my daughter's been playing the soundtrack A LOT ever since (thanks, Apple Music!)....
However, in my opinion, the film's story is just a little too "sweet" - a little more depth to the characters and a little more time focussed on the consequences of certain actions would have improved the story in my opinion, and made for a more "well-rounded" film. It was just a little too light-and-fluffy, really.
So not quite 10/10 for me; but probably still an 8 or 9.

Can't comment on that bit; haven't seen LA LA Land yet. Maybe one day.

I wouldn't bother, most overrated movie of the year for my money.
