The Darkest Hour - I wasn't aware of the political opposition to Churchill during his very early days as Prime Minister, so I learned something new there. However, there was no real suspense as everyone knows he remained Prime Minister for the duration of WWII, as is now regarded as something of a hero. For that reason, although very well acted, I found it a little long and a little boring. 6/10

I loved La La Land, probably in my top 5 films of last year (and I normally don't care for musicals).

Coco, with my daughter. Initially I thought it was a rip-off of The Book of Life, due to the story being around the same Mexican traditions... However it is not with quite different stories. Some people say the cinema was very dusty by the end of the movie, but I didn't think it so. Give it 8/10.

LA Land would be the worst movie I have ever seen. It goes to show that we all have different tastes which is the way it is meant to be.

It will be a Netflix watch for me, so may be a few months away from an opinion, but I will watch. The Shape of Water will be my next visit to the big screen.

Ok, it's that time of the year - what were your favourite five movies that you saw in the cinema last year? Mine, in no particular order:

Bladerunner 2049
Hell or High Water
The Florida Project
Trainspotting T2
Get Out (although it loses a lot of it's punch away from the big screen).

And notable mentions to La La Land, Mother!, Nocturnal Creatures, Moonlight, Baby Driver and the Big Sick.

The Counsellor by Ridley Scott is the worst movie for me. Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem were just awful.

Problem with that, and it was noted today here re @networkn and @dafman is that a movie can be loved and hated. Everyone has varying tastes.

Watched Child 44 on Netflix last night, Loved it. It is a little bit slow in places but gripping. Great period sets, scenes and photography. Script well written and the actors pull this off superbly. Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman & Noomi Rapace

A WW2 Order of Lenin soldier becomes an officer of the Russian military police (Militsiya) during the Stalinist era and whilst trying to investigate a series of child murders is set up and disgraced supposedly because this sort of crime doesn't exist in Stalin's USSR.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Oops forgot to give my rating but I agree with a solid 8/10 from me.

Seen a few movies over the last few weeks. Best of the bunch was The Greatest Showman 9/10. My family all enjoyed this a lot and is the pick of the summer movies so far for us.

I found Ferdinand and Star Wars to be very average. While I still like the Star Wars setting it just does not do a lot in really engaging me and fully entertaining me.

Missed Coco as the kids saw this yesterday with their poppa so hopefully get to this at some stage.

Enjoyed Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets on Apple TV. My family also enjoyed this one. Very visual and while it feels like you should have had a few drinks before hand it was a good family watch.

Finally watched Coco last night. Very moving story about the importance of family in your life. I think most people in the theater were in tears by the end - 9/10

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (9/10) Rated R16 for Violence, rape themes, suicide & offensive language

Wow. Very dark, often quite funny; and a very moving, though-provoking film. Do NOT go to see this if you are already feeling depressed or upset, however...

Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand are both well deserving of their award nominations / wins to date; as is the film.

Minor nitpicks: Very hard to place WHEN the film is set - a strange mixture of old and new, which to be honest could just reflect small-town rural US (I've never lived there). Also one very obvious (when you listen to her!) Australian actress seems to have increasing trouble with her accent as the film progresses - pity, and a quick throw-away line of dialog could have helped to explain that, too.
