Speaking of La La Land we went to a movies in the park last night that had it playing.

Held at Milford reserve on Auckland's North Shore it was a very pleasant evening. Loads of room even with a large turnout, perfect weather with the stars out and a very light breeze. I found the movie better the second time round. Maybe it was the atmosphere but certainly more watchable. The picture was better than expected considering how rough/dirty the screen looked. The sound not so good, just passable. Very painful in places, not due to soundtrack :) and hard to hear in places.

A very nice family movie night with a picnic.

Bladerunner 2049
Hell or High Water
The Florida Project
Trainspotting T2
Get Out (although it loses a lot of it's punch away from the big screen).
And notable mentions to La La Land, Mother!, Nocturnal Creatures, Moonlight, Baby Driver and the Big Sick.

The only one of those I saw was Baby Driver, which I really enjoyed. I saw it on a plane though, not in the cinema.

TBH I can't actually recall a single film I saw last year, except the new Star Wars one. I did see a few but none of them made enough impact on me for me to remember them, apparently!

Edit - I should add that I have pretty unsophisticated tastes when it comes to films. Sci fi, guns, explosions, car chases, spies etc yes. Pretty much anything else, no. Definite no to anything 'romantic' or 'emotional' as that translates to "I wish I'd bought my Kindle..."

Also one very obvious (when you listen to her!) Australian actress seems to have increasing trouble with her accent as the film progresses - pity, and a quick throw-away line of dialog could have helped to explain that, too.

+1 for three billboards. Outstanding film. It was much darker than I expected. Brilliantly scripted and cast. My only niggle is that I lost empathy for McDormand's character after the (won't insert spoiler) scene, so was a little offside from her from that point on.

The Shape of Water. This is an outstanding movie, taking ET and turning it into a love story. You should see it on the big screen before it disappears. A more mainstream movie than you'd typically expect from Guillermo del Toro, but still with some nice dark touches. A superb cast with Michael Shannon at his most menacing. I can't recommend highly enough.

I watched this last night and certainly enjoyed it, just not as much as I’d thought I would given the hype I’d heard. I found the tone of the film inconsistent, but agree the two main actors were excellent, and parts of it were very funny (though too many of these were in the trailer itself).

I kinda thought Abbie Cornish’s accent was left deliberately fully Aussie, but get your point it was just left unexplained so did jar a bit. I don’t recall her sounding like that in other movies I’ve seen her in (well, can only remember her from Bright Star).

The Darkest Hour - I wasn't aware of the political opposition to Churchill during his very early days as Prime Minister, so I learned something new there. However, there was no real suspense as everyone knows he remained Prime Minister for the duration of WWII, as is now regarded as something of a hero. For that reason, although very well acted, I found it a little long and a little boring. 6/10

Wish I read this before watching. Agree with everything but your rating, I'd give it a 4/10. Too long and waste of two hours.

I thought Abbie character was supposed to be Australian. ie. Woody's character married an Aussie.

The Lovely Bones 7/10

Hadn't watched this Peter Jackson effort for a while and still liked it. Interesting viewpoints on a nasty murder.

Paper Moon 8/10

A 1973 film with Ryan and Tatum O'Neil directed by Peter Bogdanovitch. Engaging and an outstanding performance form Tatum O'Neill. Probably a bit too cute for this cynical age.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 - Vince Vaughn turns in an excellent performance as a dedicated husband and soon-to-be father, who is also one mean-ass mofo. A little slow starting (required to establish his character), but once he hits prison (not really a spoiler given the title of the movie) all bets are off. There is some excessive violence, which is not for the squeamish. With a title like that it has no right to be as thoroughly entertaining as it is. 8/10

The Thinning - 6.3/10. YouTube Red. Teen dystopia. First 20 min is a bit lame. Enjoyable suspense for the rest. Losing points on the ending because it is 100% part one of two. Imo wait for part two before starting.

Done a few in the last couple of months.

Planet of the Apes: The Marky Mark remake in 2001 or something. I remember my dad insisting I watch the original when I was a kid and everyone being blown away when the plot twist happened. I thought this one was a load of rubbish, pretty sure I feel asleep at one point. 2/10

Baby Driver: Loved it, awesome sound track, some of the driving was pretty unbelievable but really enjoyed it. 8.5/10

Gold: A great premise but could have been half an hour shorter if they'd removed half of the drinking to excess when the money was rolling in parts. Thought it was a little paint by numbers to be honest. 6.5/10

The Equaliser: Again, my dad and I watched the original British tv series with Edward Woodward dishing out the retribution. Denzel does a half decent job but cliched scene after cliched scene just drag the whole movie down for me. 5/10
